Hey everyone,

There is no official training this week due to the Halibut tournament. We will hopefully see you all again the following week! (feel free to go for a throw over the weekend and practice some skills!)

Taking candy from a baby...

Ok the title doesn't really suggest how close the game actually was, it was very tight all the way but I couldn't go past the pun. In fact the game was played with the best spirit and competitiveness too... perhaps it wasn't as cute or as cuddly as this, but it came close...

Baby Chimichangas (hehe)

The scene was set for a somewhat windy Annerlly night and for once heroes decided to turn up early to the game, and Babychimis caught the no players bug. Peta could only count 4 players and was almost insisting on forfiet. Gladly she was able to take our advice and not to such a thing. Eventually their players turned up, right on the cut off time and we had a 'live' game as it were.

The game was very evenly matched and we traded and traded points throughout the entire game, with some breaks and break backs to keep it interesting. Heroes fielded a brand new player by the name of Scott who seemed a little confused in his first outing but by the end scored a point which was really cool for him (In my first BUML game I didnt even touch it!) and I think thats the best positive thing about our team is that we are willing to throw to the best positioned player, regardless of skill or gender.

Props to Brad and James who are both first season players who have improved DRAMATICALLY since their first games. Play of the match for me was when I got the disc in the back 1/3 of the field, called brad long and saw which way he went and hucked it to him to score. Personally its so nice to have someone like Brad who will run down everything. Chimis played with great spirit all game and complimented us on every score we made on them which was lovely. I just hope we showed the same spirit back, otherwise i think we might be losing the beloved mantle of nicest team in the league (Brisbane?!?... Australia???)

Final score 11-10 i believe. Mention must be given on the final point where it was last possession for Baby chimis and they scored their 10th with a great curved forehand to Arrlann who did the nice check of feet in the endzone and caught the disc just outside the field of play - very nice

Right now this is getting serious. I am unavailable to play and therefore organize this tourney - BUT we wanna see a green team there.


Final Rego closes on the 30th July and for those uni students who just work by what ever uni week you're in, This is by the end of week 1 - UQ and by the end of week 2 - QUT. Of coarse no one really cares about Griffith.
Having said that the BIC should be a great day out and its appears that our home grown Luke "STARky" Stark has put his hand up to captain the inaugural Heroes indoor team just by nominating for i need a team here. Good on you STARky. Yes its that easy to sign up. For all you ppl with nothing better to do with your Ekka holiday, play some ultimate, i hear its alright - even for un-dead people...

Halibut Seedings

Hi all
Scoot on over to the Gold Coast Blog and check out the seedings for Halibut. To save you the hassle, Heroes has been ranked 9/10. What does this say? We've got some proving wrong to do!
All Halibut Heroes must be attending the Sunday training session at Toowong @ 3pm. Sylan Rd at the Wests Rugby Club. We will have coaching (real coaches) available so get there, or you may not start on the line on the 31st.

So savage, so close

Before we get into last nights wrap up, lets have a look and reflect at what a cool thing the callahan is




Tomsteve last night was involved in one of the rarer aspects to the ultimate game. Unfortunately he was the handler who gave it to Mansauce, literally. Tomsteve tried this outstretched lunge of a backhand fake and on his way back up decided to throw it anyways and threw it straight into the arms of mansauce. It was a little bit funny but it actually gave Dyspnoeics a brake up, after we managed to claw it back.

Jumping back to the start of the game, Heroes started out savage and had to play most of the night with no girl subs and eventually 1 boy sub. The opposition seemed to jump out of the blocks and score the early exchanges to be 2-0, maybe even 3-0. Dyspnoeics arrived early and did their warm up drills which seemed to work well for them, something which we need to address in the Heroes div2 side.
With some eventual warmer hands we brought it  back with some well good zone action and managed to get some break backs to take the game to 8-9. Then the callahan happened. 8-10. both teams went on to score one extra point each and the game finished at 11-9 heroes losing, what we probably should have won. With a full strength roster and players turning up on time I thought we might have come away with a win, but a very enjoyed game was played anyways.

AO Match Report Round 4

After their defeat to in-form Discheads last week, Bermuda were out to redeem themselves tonight. Orange welcomed back Dstrel from his OS adventures but were missing Steph to the same cause. James was seen smashing down a kebab only moments before the game.

Wind conditions (at least at the start of the game) suited zone, which always suits Bermuda, but it was AO who struck first. A strong zone and some fast offence saw AO take the score to 6-3. Dave made some big leaps and new recruit Cam was cutting well. Our zone started getting sloppy however, where Bermuda's was finally getting stuck in. Things got hairy. We had no answer to Bermuda's D. At one point we (accidently) tried playing with 8 players after a substitution miscommunication. Not surprisingly this wasn't the answer. Bermuda scored 6 in a row to 9-6. AO stayed instensely competitive but couldn't convert another point until after the buzzer 9-7.

After the '4 grading games' AO have 1W 2L 1Bye. So it would be expected that we end up in the 2nd pool of div2. That's a shame! I'll wait for the BUML announcement though before I shed a tear.

Brisbane Indoor Ultimate Championships

The Brisbane Indoor Ultimate Championship will be held on the public holiday Ekka Wednesday, 11 August.

As we as a club now have a reputant to enter into every league and tourny, we will now again put a call out for interest to play. I think the cost is $130 tbc. And just check I could be wrong but Im fairly sure its just the one day on competition. Indoor ultimate is different to outdoor and rules are different. Max team rosters are 8 and 5 on a court at once. read more here about the rules.

Discheads successfully navigate through the Triangle

On Monday night a spirited Discheads outfit took on the might of Bermuda Triangle. We welcomed back a few members for the first time this season, namely Bev, Lisa and Katie (who cheered from the sidelines due to not owning any shoes currently???). The newbies picked up the disc at the point they finished last season and provided good cuts and silky handling skills.

Discheads went point for point with Bermuda to 3-3 before we were able to string a few points together to take the score to 6-3. From there it appeared as though we had set up a winning margin. To Bermuda's credit they never gave up and pulled back the score to 9-7 when last possession was called. We had the disc at the time and weren't able to create a scoring opportunity and that is how the score remained.

Bermuda Triangle, as always, played a great, fast, hard fought match. A few uncharacteristic errors probably let them down a bit. Well done to Discheads who played with great enthusiasm and also ran really hard throughout the game, placing a lot of pressure on the handlers and catchers from Bermuda. Special mention goes to Chris Fox who handled really well, directing the disc around the field, and to Jo who worked tirelessly in the midfield and handled very well when required.

Hard boiled eggs

Last night Heroes played Poachers, and boi were they hard to crack, but we gave them a push. Their infamous(!?!) star Canadian recruit's skill/reputation had been spreading throughout the club as one to watch out for. But getting away from him Heroes played really well in the end. These early starts are totally killing any sort of preparation/warm up and so we struggled for about the first 15 mins going down 4-1. Poachers were nice enough to relax their zone, even though I did warn Dan that we could play better and that it probably wasn’t their zone getting on top of us, more our own silly errors. But still they were nice enough to go to Man D. I thought this was the trigger point for us in the game. We quickly got the score back closer to 6-4. Laura H was the catalyst with scoring something like 5 points and getting 3 blocks - WooT.
After playing, and getting back into the game, Poachers allowed us to pick up a player (Dave B) and we thought we would allow their zone once more. The game traded points until 10-9 with the Poachers on serve (they would always be the ones getting the 1-up point), and were beginning to realise they had the long advantage on a huck. They seemed to only score this way and in contrast we scored by nicely linked passing. I began playing a hard straight up D on Poachers main handler which seemed to restrict the huck quite well and we were able to get some easy turnovers from wayward throws.
In the end, Poachers broke the heroes and went up 13-10 when last possession was called on the Poachers pull. To our credit we scored on last possession rather easily and ran the game out to 13-11.
Poachers played very well and the spirit of the game was very much the winner, but more accurately Poachers had won. We felt as though we played well considering being down by so much at the start. Great game poachers and yes we'll see you in the finals to come :P

Training

Hey everyone,
Training is on again this Sunday and we may have a few new faces coming to join us. Skills training ie. throwing, simple drills etc will start at 3pm sharp and a pick up game will be organised at about 3:45. Please bring a black and white shirt. See you all there (Wests Rugby, Sylvan Road Toowong).

Discheads decisive victory!

Discheads leapt to great heights last night to scrape by with a win in a traditionally hard fought contest against Griffith Go Go's. At the start of the game Griffith were down a few players due to the new earlier start times and Discheads had assembled early but were playing savage because a few of our members are still away overseas. In what was an almost identical line up to last week, we took the field running and went straight to a 4-0 lead. Griffith Go Go's scored intermittent points throughout the match to have the final result as 11-3 to Discheads. Discheads had fairly good composure and showed a high level of frisbee skills to take the game relatively comfortably.

To the credit of GGG they played hard all night, not letting us get any free points. They seem to be improving week in, week out and I can see them being a real threat in the not too distant future.

Special mention to Chantelle and Matt who worked tirelessly in the midfield and took some really impressive grabs.

At the end of the night frisbee was indeed the winner! (sorry for all the cliches in this post, they were a special request from my fellow team members :))

Silent George goes to worlds

Our own 'not so grown' Silent George has recently found himself on the Australian club side 'The Redbacks" if you didnt know. It should have been fairly common knowledge but *sigh* George isnt the one to boast, buts thats why we love him!

So far he's played three games and managed to score in each one which is a great effort considering the quality of opposition over there in Prague. So if you've got George Salisbury on Facebook or can email him a supporters message I'm sure he'll love to hear from you. Keep up the good work mate

Heroes get hard force on Frisky Time

In the tradition of the post match summary of the game this post will be no different. Last night Heroes played the newly submitted Frisky Time in what looked to be a disastrous match for us with only 6 players with Brad, Megs, TomSteve and James MIA. Anyways so we played savage, and it didn't seem to matter with FT playing with lots of new faces (which was very encouraging to see).

Heroes took an early lead to be 2-0 playing zone defences. I thought we'd change it up and do a poaching man D. 2-1. Back to zone. Esp since Julz decided to turn up for FT. We simply out experienced the FT'ers to stretch the game out to (i'll say...) 8-1. We played good defence actually but I felt as though our offense just wasn't there. We found it easy to move the disc up the field and even easier to drop it either in the endzone or just close to it. But I think maybe a lack of subs and the occasional bad throw (from yours truly) lead to that.

Frisky Time seemed to get organized on O by using their long options well and scored 2 more times closer to the end taking the game to 9-3. A few crucial mistakes on D lead to those scores, simply not being behind the last man but having said that we did play a fairly good zone most of the night. We probably should have come out on Man D in the spirit of new players on the opposition but our savage line meant we didn't really have a choice. Final score 10-3. Notable performances:

TRAINING
