Elite Training

Firestorm is the elite men's club of Brisbane, which exists to compete at Nationals.
Black Betty is the elite women's club of Brisbane which exists to compete at Nationals.

Both clubs are training over the summer and are open to anyone in the early stages.

Why am I telling you this? HUC is becoming more competitive, and we encourage our players to fast-track their development, by training with these elite clubs.

So.. who should train with Firestorm/Black Betty?

1. Men/Women who wish to play at nationals. The event is being held in Brisbane this year, and I know that Firestorm wish to send 2 teams, so about 40 spots may be up for grabs. T
his is an achievable goal for many of us.

2. Anyone who wishes to play with the Heroes at an elite level next year. This includes BPL men and Wonder Women. Div 1 hopefuls are also encouraged. Selections will be necessary for BPL, and while the process has not been fully discussed, Firestorm training will be a sign of dedication to personal development.

3. Anyone who wishes to go to Canada in 2014 for the World Ultimate Club Championships. This will be a mixed gender squad. Perhaps this deserves another post. We will be attending tournaments this year and until 2014 as club. You could say that Mixed Nationals 2011 hopefuls should train with Black Betty / Firestorm.

4. Anyone who wishes to train hard and improve quickly!

Here are the details:

As many of our regular readers will know, Nationals 2011 will be held here in Brisbane.

Brisbane-based Women's Ultimate club Black Betty have announced their initial training schedule, and are inviting all those interested in the campaign to join them.

Training will start on Thursday 11 November and run through to 16 December, before resuming again on 13 January. Sessions run 7pm-9pm at Oakman Park, Toowong. The astute will see that Black Betty training runs on from the end of the current season of WUFL.

November and December 2010 - Anyone can come and train with Firestorm

8/9th January 2011 - weekend training camp in Brisbane, at the end of which we will be selecting a sqaud for 2011. This squad will be made up of players who meet the required standard (or are improving fast) and want to play with Firestorm that year. Unless numbers dictate otherwise, this is likely to be closed to players wishing to play for another team at nationals 2011.

29/30th January 2011 - weekend training camp in Brisbane, at the end of which we will be selecting teams for nationals 2011.

OnThePitch going after a superstar in the making

As the season draws to a end it is timely to talk more with players of the club. And who was more likely than this guy... Bevan kindley sat down and answered some of our questions.

Right Bevan, whats drawn you to play ultimate? You're abilities seem to be endless, you could play anything?
Honestly, I would be playing aussie rules if I could, but ultimate allows me to play without training several times a week. This said, ultimate is very athletic, and I love running and jumping all over the place. Lastly, I love getting to play with all my mates and have a laugh whether I'm winning or losing.
Yea I guess having a laugh is the most important thing...  Tell me a bit more about yourself?
Currently doing my cert III in Horticulture at TAFE, enjoying that. I also enjoy cycling but have a flat tire so I have had to give that up.
As we turned the halfway mark of the BPL season, can you provide an insight for the readers to the BPL team that is Heroes?
I think we are beginning to play to each others strengths a bit more, working better as a team. We have the drive to become a great team, and if the boys continue with the attitude we have now, it will happen.
How has your own form been? I notice you've collected enough nominations for the BPL MVP award...
Enough? ENOUGH?? When someone has had/got enough of something that usually means they wouldn't like or do not need any more. As I would be happy to acquire more, I will disagree with you saying that I have enough. That said, I encourage/challenge any of you Heroes to take points from the rest of the season. It can only benefit us as a team if we are all trying to step up. I have been happy with the way I have played in several games this season, but I still have plenty of room for improvement. I want to play well consistently, I want to increase my decision making and positioning on the field, and I want to lay out more.
What has surprised you/not surprised you this season compared to last?
I can't think of anything that has really surprised me. It's interesting to see the changes in teams after a few player swaps, looks like a pretty close season so far. I would like to be surprised by the boys this Thursday night with a points grabbing performance!
Ok, lets move this back to a Monday night. You seem to be the on field leader of the discheads, while spaz and jo take the official responsibilities? are you ok with that? is that something you would like to change in the future?
I'm ok continuing things the way they are. I love playing for the Discheads, and enjoy trying to help us play better. I guess because I have played for longer, I feel like I can help us keep improving, but mainly the fact that the team listens to me and is willing to learn is the reason I want to help out. We are a great team, and we have lots of fun playing together.
Will we ever see a return to this?

There is always a chance when the weather gets a bit cooler each year that I may avoid the clipper a bit longer. I don't think it will get that big again without encouragement though.

What is the secret to your super human talents?
I don't have any super human talents. Although I do eat at least one can of cold baked beans a week, and love a tall glass of cold (full cream) milk, this has got to help. I have heard rumours of a Tom Rudolph possessing such talents.
Ha there you have it, if you want to know what its like to be Bevan, just eat a can of cold baked beans!! Righto, What is your favorite number?
Most people would assume it's 33. I was going to ask for number 5 when ordering my heroes jersey, but then was queried as to why I wasn't getting 33. I'm going to say my favourite is 33, but number 5 is also superb.

Who on the Heroes BPL team would you turn gay for?
Anyone if they win a game for us.

Ok last question...
Angus and Julia Stone OR Ultimate?
Ultimate.

Take a short moment to read Huddy's vision and plan for WUCC 2014
. What do you think?

Have a go at writing a Mission Statement (perhaps based on the objectives below)
. Here are two that have been submitted already: 'To play, promote and develop fun, skilled, and spirited Ultimate' and 'Playing our hardest for the most enjoyable and spirited Ultimate.'

Also take a longer moment to read over the model rules of Incorporated Associations if you can be bothered. Added to that will be our objectives - so far looking like this:

To play enjoyable Ultimate Disc.

To set the standard of spirit on and off the field.

To encourage and foster new players to Ultimate.

To maintain socially playing members.

To develop elite level players.

To support our governing bodies (BUDA, QUDA, AFDA for example) where possible in their tasks of growing and strengthening the sport of Ultimate Disc.

Membership will also be discussed and voted on, so have a think about how much you would be happy to pay (if anything) to see this club reach its potential. Personally I would support a single level of membership with a $10 annual fee (a) because its affordable and (b) because it would be enough to get the ball rolling with orders for discs and uniforms as well as potential field hire/come and try days/parties/whatever!

The spirit contract would be a way of communicating the vision and spirit of the club to all players, as well as being a means of accountability for players who show patterns of bad spirit.

When you were looking through the positions did anything take your fancy? Is there something that you would like to do that isn't currently on the list? Nominations will of course still be welcome on the night but if you'd like to nominate yourself for a position now please email opshop_bum@hotmail.com with the subject title Nomination For. I will compile the pre-nominations and post them in the week leading up to the meeting.

If you have anything else you would like discussed/voted on at the meeting get in touch and I will put it on the agenda. If you don't you can still bring it up, just at the end of the meeting when everyone's getting antsy for the party. If you have general comments please make them below
