What: SignOn and 2 hours of frisbee fun, including throwing competitions (longest huck, accuracy etc) and a bbq

Why: to organise the buml teams and kick the club year off!

ADBUC 2012

Beach Ultimate. This was my first ever experience of it, and it is great fun- and hard work. During the weekend just gone by 90 odd players gathered on the sands of Coolangatta Beach, with a gusty southerly breeze.

We were the third seed in Pool B, and faced the top seed of the pool first; Flex. The first half saw Heroes having to adjust everything about our game to suit the conditions, Flex quickly ran out to a 7-point lead. The second half was much more pleasing, due to Flex losing concentration and us figuring out what we can do, the game ending in 11-3.

After a bit of a break we played ‘The Adventures of HUCKleberry Finn’ – which could also win the prize for the longest team name ever. With a DojoMojo core, Huckleberry played well, but with an actual warmup and extra throwing practice between games, so did the Heroes. Both teams spent the first few points sorting out the other, with each team getting several layout Ds. End score was 10-5 (??). Comment with a real score.

As many would agree, lunch was very appreciated, with the usual chicken and salad roll/sandwiches and the killer cheese as well. (thanks Taty!)

Last game for the day was against Trevor goes to the Beach. Heroes were consistent and controlled, with Jamie and Myall both pulling everything down- as was Trevor Lovering. End score 8-5 Heroes win.

The first game on Sunday was against Lovers. This was a tight game. Chris Brown dogged the Heroes to play for the Lovers, and Gref controlling the team – the students played a tight brand of breach ultimate that was difficult to counter. End score was a close victory for the Heroes (maybe 2 or 3 points).

Next up were the eventual champions from Wollongong, we were outgunned – as were almost every other team present. Claiming 4 points for ourselves to 13. They then went on to the grand final against Flex and won convincingly.

The 3^rd place playoff included Heroes and Dusty’s Crumbled Quince. Both teams played damn hard, but Heroes did gave too much cheap disc to Reese and George – allowing them to take half 7-6. At this point time cap was called. Using my understanding of the rules, this would mean add 1 to the score and game to that, i.e. 8. Quince scored and most of the sidelines all assumed it was game; however it was decided (?) that it would be a game to 9 instead. In a strange and cruel twist the wind picked up, and the stakes raised. After 2 marathon-15plus-turnover-point Quince edged Heroes out for 3^rd, 9-7.

All in all a freaking sweet tourney, amazing organisation and great fun.

During the leagues take the summer break, several Heroes have been busting their guts training with Firestorm. For the uninitiated, or those that just dont know/care, Firestorm is Brisbane's Elite Ultimate Club thats central activity is to play at the elite level at Nationals. Involved in achieving this are several tournaments during the season, like the Sydney-Melbourne Open, Northern and Eastern Regionals, the Brisbane-Canberra Invitational and ultimately Nationals in April (22nd- 25th).

The first representitive team has been selected with the includion of a few Heroes members for the Sydney-Melbourne Open. These boys are noneother than Sebastian and Chris Brown. Huge props to these boys! The club should feel very proud to have these boys in our ranks.

The Sydney-Melbourne Open is held during 17th and 18th of Feburary, in Sydney.

2011 has been a massive year for the Heroes Ultimate Club; however, 2012 is shaping up to trump it.

During the year, the Heroes competed at almost every level with good and pleasing results. We made our Mixed Nationals debut this year, coming up with a 20th place finish, including a nail biting rollercoster cross pool game against the Villains- hailing from Townsville - with an end score 14/13.

The Green Men continued to improve with a BPL finals birth, losing to eventual premiers - Slamtown - in the semi-final. Chris Brown also won the Heroes BPL MVP, albeit self-awarded (and undisputed when announced). I'm sure these guys will be pushing to go one better next year.

The club again played with three teams throughout 2011, Heroes, Agent Orange and Discheads.

Heroes played in Div 1 the whole year placing 5th in season 2. More on this team later.

Agent Orange was a division 2 powerhouse all year hardly losing a game outside finals, led by Gavin 'El presidente' Croft as well as danbot strelan and Bev. AO won its way all the way into the season 1 grand final, only to play within themselves and go down to The Ghost who walks - who then were promoted to Div 1 and struggled. AO strategy all along? In season 2, AO really turned up the heat and only lost one game. Unfortunately, it was the first week of finals against the sister team, Discheads, therefore placing them at 3rd. MVPs were Josh Weier and Lauren Hutton, great season guys!

After winning the Buml div2 season 2010, we were promoted to Div1 in season 1; and as appears symptomatic of div2 winners - really struggled for pace and solid skills. Season 2 saw the team leaders asking for div2 entry, and with seven rookies off we went. After scraping into the finals, we had a very special game against AO. Down 7-1, DH managed to get many turns and convert to make it 8-7 DH way, and take the win 10 - 8. Peter Truss, one of the rookies, came up with a massive layout D to stop an assist and with this, he won MVP. Chantelle Smith must have scored upward of 35 points over the season won the female MVP.

WonderWomen again won the WUFL, the second year on the trot, defeating the SuperTramps 15-6. Several new player in this team really lifted an enjoyed the challenge, even with some sporadically attending veterans.
I can't remember the MVP, but I would hazard a guess at Lauren Hutton - she had a stack of trophies.

Next Year, the Club plans to continue with all the current teams, including the Mixed Nationals teams - who should be aiming in improve on its 20th placing, BPL Heroes looking at a 2nd or 3rd place and WonderWomen to keep on trucking (winning the whole thing again). Buml however is where a club shakedown is rumoured to be. One idea has been to move all three current teams to divison2, creating space for a new division 1 powerhouse - whose name is strictly under wraps.

Mid Season Mixed Mix

Heroes behold, once every thousand years or so all three of our mixed teams play at the same field on a Monday night. This moment is almost upon us! The Gap SHS beckons us with a suggestive invitation.... What a glorious evening it will be: hard running, hard cheering, hard high fives and bum slaps!! What a beautiful stroke of fate that Croft Manor is located two minutes drive away, and happens to be overflowing at present with delicious beer!

All members of the Heroes club are invited to have a warm down drink post games this Monday. Stay for 20 mins, stay for 2 hours, it's not at all out of your way (unless you live up Mt. Nebo). Heroes playing on other teams at other fields are of course welcome to come too. Spectators, club friends and partners are welcome (especially if they are the DD - am I right!). Having work the next day is not an excuse. If there's a rain out the party will start sooner.

Extra beer will be made available for the Discheads who will be drowning their sorrows after their humiliating defeat at the hands of AO. I hope to get you so drunk as to erase all memory of the total annihilation that you will have faced that evening. It's my way of saying sorry.

Heroes Victorious Over Dojo

The men in green gave the kenshi a schooling last night, forcing the old fuddy duddies at Dojo to set up the porta-field, for the first time in BPL history. The move came at 7:30, when Jangles taunted "Are you guys going to set up the field?".

Sensei or Coops... I dunno, they all look the same to me (except Daz), retorted "We're just gonna set up cones, do you mind?"

I could see this coming, and contributed from downfield "Yeah, we do mind!" - it is doubtful whether this comment fell on any ears at all, let alone the aging auricles of our foe.

Another voice, probably Fatty, chipped in "No one wants to hang around after the game to pack the bastard down".

But our fearsome leader held strong, stating firmly "We have some young guys who probably won't go to uni in the morning, they don't mind".

In the end, expert Carl had to explain how to roll out the cumbersome lines, as Dojo were caught with their pants down, never expecting this outcome.

The game started at around 7:55pm.

Post-match, during the circle of light-hearted banter, Cola mentioned that he suspected he would read a report in the morning. Let me say this "Allan Scott - You were WRONG!" It's now well into the PM.

Heroes V Buggers

The past few games between the two teams have made for some great action both on and off the field. In a relatively calm night (considering the windy day we had) aL Don was quoted to say
"Their game was easily the most interesting of all three in tonight's BPL"

Well if the Don says so it must be true.

In reality both teams played pretty well, but dare I say, Heroes looking the better on O seemingly scoring in fast paced attack and the Bugs having to work for every point. The two teams traded until 6 all when Heroes managed to get up and take a break of the buggers and very quickly take half at 8-6. At half time the circle was certainly a more relaxed one than compared to previous seasons and after half we managed to continue the fast paced O and break away on some sloppy offense from the men in white.
In a post match interview Jangles was interviewed and said,
"We showed some maturity tonight to really run away with the game at the end. Our offense was sweet and the defense was stronger but still need to be ramped up. We have really come a long way from the group of BUML player looking to break into the big leagues to a solid team that can roll anyone on the day"
And for you, who was the MVP tonight?
"Well the browntown pairing of Seb and Chris really shown through, but I think the better brown won it tonight"
"Also Myall played superbly on Stu and really shut him down early on in the game which really helped us get up"

Again Jangles went for the crappy circle of love cheer whilst the begrudging remaining players(cheerers) went with it and walked away muttering amongst themselves about how lame it is....

Also Rolo Lover will be pleased to hear the old boy played well and I think got more than one score in the endzone

Sunday Training 21.08.11

Sunday training this week is at Oakman Park from 3-5pm. The reason for this is that the women's HAT/pick-up/learn to play day is on also at Oakman Park from 2-4pm. I've had a chat to Bri and the plan is to have Heroes training on one side of the ground and then at 4pm to join in with the ladies and have a big game of Mixed Ultimate! This should make for a fun afternoon of ultimate. Again, this training and game is open to ALL Heroes members and is really good practice and warm up for Monday night's game.

- sunscreen

Heroes Sunday training is on again from 3-5pm this Sunday afternoon at Kenmore AFL fields (just off Centenary Highway Fig Tree Pocket exit).

This training is for all frisbee players no matter your ability. We spend the first hour working on skills/drills and spend the last hour playing a pick-up game.

What you need to bring:

Halibut Heroes

This blog has laid dormant for too long! Last weekend the Heroes mixed squad played in the 15th version of the Australia-wide recognised Halibut tournament. This year the tournament was held on the Gold Coast at the home of the GC suns, Carrara stadium. The fields were fantastic, as to was the organisation of the tournament by Stef and co.

Heroes were seeded in 11th spot and unfortunately we were unable to improve on our seeding, finishing in 11th overall. Although we finished in the bottom 4 of the tournament it certainly doesn't represent the number of games where we were in genuine contention. Saturday saw us play against Blue Steel (byron bay), Griffindoor (new pick-upy team), Short Skirt Long Jacket (old schoolers), and lastly DTF (young hipsters).

BS took control early against a nervous Heroes outfit. Heroes managed to get 4 on the board, all of which came from some very nice play. The team played fairly well with good structure but a few skill errors let us down, and against a team like BS they score after every turn. Griffindoor were playing their first game together ever and Heroes were able to take advantage with a solid 15-4 win. A few of their American imports were really quite good and I hear they improved throughout the tourney. SSLJ were too slow, too old, too achey, but really they were just too damned good. Great experienced calm offence and an awesome no look scoober into the endzone to score by big Tony Ross. Score was 15-6 to SSLJ.

The focus before the tournament was on our last game of the day against DTF. We were really excited for it and everyone played exceptionally well for the first half, hardly any errors and well structured play (we also focussed on the weaknesses of Carl and Laura, the former becoming quite frustrated ;) ). At one stage we raced away to a 7-2 lead before Reece called the TO. Reece, Gio and Finn calmed their troops down and they went on to win the match 15-11. It seems like DTF raced away with the win after half but they really did have to earn it. Well done Heroes! Solid improvement throughout the day.

Saturday night saw us have an enjoyable time at the party, with Gav showing off his personal talent of an iron gut, before we retired to our backpackers. I fell asleep to the sounds of Hugh and the rest of the Townsville crew chatting loudly. Then also awoke many times during the night to the same group having numerous chats, obviously strategising for how to beat Heroes come Sunday afternoon. How they can play a whole day on little to no sleep also amazes me.

Sunday morning saw a tired Heroes finish off their pool games against Fun Police (all stars) and Bondage (GC team). Eventual tournament and party talent winners Fun Police were a classy mix of home grown and interstate talent. They raced to 8-0 before we scored 3 in a row. Final score of 15-3. Bondage played hard, really hard. Harder than we were used to and it showed with us getting a bit flustered at critical stages of the match. This is a match we could have won. Bondage played savage girls for the entire day and did extremely well to run out a tough fought match. Skill errors and some decision making when close to the end zone cost us a number of points. The final score was 13-9 Bondage.

For the cross over match we played QUTies and had a really enjoyable game against them. Heroes club BUML players Craig and Starkey did really well. Unfortunately, the relative inexperience of the QUT side had the Heroes triumph with a score of 13-6. The last game of the day and the weekend saw us fairly evenly matched against Taste my Rainbow (Townsvillains). If not for their late name change it would have been a classic Heroes vs Villains showdown. The intensity and closeness of the match did not disappoint with TMR clawing away at the end to take the game 10-9.

Heroes had a great weekend on the whole. Although a few of the results weren't in our favour we played well as a team and there are definite signs that we can and will improve on our skills and structure. Having the killer instinct to put teams away and to play a complete game of ultimate will be our aim for the rest of the season.

Discheads Vs Heroes Vs Agent Orange

On the 31st we are holding the Heroes first intra club competition!!!!!

FAQs:
What does this mean?: Well all three teams can come together on a Sunday afternoon and play each other in a round robin competition and see who holds the balance of power in the HUC

Can I play if I didnt play in a BUML team? Yes of coarse, as with any event it will be hard to pull whole team numbers on the day and we understand that. So if you played BPL, wonderwomen etc etc or just on other various teams throughout the Brisbane league calendar AND you still call heroes home WE'D LOVE YOU TO COME DOWN and pick up and share in the fun

What is the cost? At this stage Im planning on keeping it free as can be
(We might have to cover costs like food etc but really thats fairly cheap, ill approach the treasurer about it) Stay tuned for any updates in this area

Whoes brain child is this anyways? All of the captains and powers to be thought this would be a great event

You only get out what you put in

Nutri-grain, to anyone over the age of about 14, is basically sickening stuff. They did well with their marketing adage though, 'You only get out what you put in.' Rather than than a mix of pulverised cereal and refined sugar however, let's talk about effort and attitude in training.

Skills and fitness are easy to get. We all have potential and we can reach it by training enough in the right ways. Easy. Done. Why say more? Because training in the right ways is difficult, and in a team sport we need everyone around us to put in as much effort as we do. Skills and fitness are easy to get, effort is not.

Training is really important, not because of the beers you have afterward, but because you play the way you train. If you don't lay out in training, how will you lay out in a game? if you taper off as your opponent scores in front of you because it's only training, how wil lyou stick with them in a game? Your muscles remember what to do, and recall it quicker than your brain does. To be the best player you can be, you need to give your muscles the right memories, and those are ones of maximal effort when it counts.

Training as a team in a team sport allows for cohesion to form, and training with effort helps that. Not only does a layout pump you up, it pumps up everyone on your team. If that happens in training, it transfers to games. So next time you go out to train, remember to put in maximal effort. Your team deserves nothing less from you.

Secondly - I assume if you are still reading this post you therefore probably do not know what we're talking about here... so let me explain what an Eastbay order actually is. Tuesday Training Option

On Tuesday night I was sitting around at home, watching some TV and generally not knowing what to do with my time. The Mrs was at home "studying" aka watching the movie Tangled which I hear is actually quite good. I thought to myself... What is better than 6:30 with George Negus? Apart from just about everything, I also thought it would be a good idea to go along to May/Molly/Stu's Tuesday night training session at Oakman Park.

The sessions are primarily aimed at maintaining frisbee skills and fitness during the break between Open and Mixed seasons. We started with a warm-up, 10 minutes of focussed throwing, and a number of kill drill variations. We then worked on a breaking the mark throwing drill before playing a fairly even match. There was quite a good turnout on a cool night with a number of the black betty girls as well as a few of Brisbane's journeyman mens fris players.

If you want to come next week, cost will be ~$5 per session you attend. Time is 7-9pm. Venue: Oakman Park. Chance to play and train with a nice group of skilled players: priceless. Bring your cleats, a white and dark shirt, disc, drink bottle.

Thanking the masses

Thanks to the small crowd that attended last nights do or die quarter final in the BPL between our own Heroes and the fresh Los Banditos. The game was a cracker with the Heroes starting very strong early and getting away to a convincing win to put a stop to the inform Banditos winning ways and subsequently their season.

The Banditos big guns started slow but in the mid section of the game came out and found their flight. In particular JJ, Gref and B-dub... It was a credit to see the improvement of this brand new team and everyone from the outside did not expect to see them on the winners sheet this season. Proving us all wrong the Banditos really stirred the pot of the BPL tipsters this season.

As far as the Heroes boys were concerned, we put together smooth and coherent passages of play and easily put scores on the board for the majority of the match. In particular stand out form was our adopted son Myall (formally of Kaboom and team happy :P ) easily MVP for the game. I think he assisted in something like 10 of our 15 points. Other usual suspects were Jangles hucking from the power position (which don't count as hucks apparently, Jangles words - not mine) and the ever likely brown-town points. Once more these Heroes of the HUC played as a team and were able to make a good positive start which ultimately set the game up for the win.
I think in the end it was a 15-7 win to the Heroes (someone correct me on that) and a great boost of confidence in the arm to finally put on a strong display over Dojo in the week to come.

Pokemon!

Before this blog post gets completely off track and I sing the complete Pokemon song in my head. I wanted to pen some ideas on how to improve an individuals ultimate frisbee game. Ultimate is a team sport and as such a lot of the focus in training and on the field during games is on the cohesion and ability of the team as a whole. This is of course necessary to get results as a team, but what can the individual do to improve his or her skills outside of the team?

As a foreword, I don't claim to be an Ultimate frisbee training guru but these are two of my observations. From what I have been reading of late (sorry no references) and from what I've seen there are 2 distinct ways in which the individual can improve their game outside of the team arena. These are fitness and skills.

These points may seem obvious but I'll explain further. Fitness can be seen in a variety of ways. You could have a good general level of fitness or you could train specifically for playing ultimate. A combination of both is probably best for pre-season training. General fitness could be jogging for 30 minutes, or cross training with cycling or swimming or rock climbing. Sport specific fitness would be training in a way that would most benefit your play on the field and is similar to the movements you make on the field. Last week at training we started doing the side to side kill drill and the away and in kill drill. This is a good example of sport specific training. This can be adapted in a number of ways.

You can train your anaerobic and lactate threshold (energy systems used during the first minute or two of high intensity exercise) by doing sprint work, HIIT (high intensity interval training), or sets of kill drills. If you have queries regarding exercises or a plan for training as an individual or as a small group please ask me and I will be able to help you out.

Skills to focus on as an individual would be mainly throwing skills. If I can use Jamie as an example, over the Firestorm season Jamie was throwing on a daily basis. His throws improved dramatically over only a few months to the point where he was impressing a lot of the big wigs with his throwing ability. Practice makes perfect. Throwing on a daily basis is obviously not feasible for everyone. By adding another one or two throwing sessions (30 minutes, deliberate, focussed throwing) on top of BUML and Sunday afternoon trainings will result in tangible improvements.

If all of the above information seems daunting, start by changing or adding one session per week. Do not train every day of the week if you usually only do two training sessions a week. Add one extra 30 minute fitness session, either general or sport specific, and one extra 30 minute throwing session. If you can do this for a month then you will have a solid training base to reevaluate your goals.

Heroes play their first full match of ultimate ever

After 3 seasons, we finally have played a game where we can say we played well all night. The match started with Heroes on D, and a mistake from Cobra's near our end zone saw us take the first point. Defensive pressure saw another 2 turn overs and Heroes take the first 3 points. The fourth one was a bit longer, and I don't know who scored it, but we got out to 5-1 from some inspirational play from Bevan and lovely shots from S.G. Chris Brown got involved with some grabs in the end zone, and also some lovely flick hucks, one out of two coming off.

Sebastian didn't get any help with some throws his way being wayward, but he ended up with some nice grabs to finish off. Cobra's got angry with themselves but this only meant that Kailin & friends would demand the disc so that he could huck it to a 50/50 option. It turned out more like 80/20 I guess.

It can be said that Cobras did not play well and had a number of unforced errors. The pleasing thing is that we cannot recall any drops that we had that were uncontested and we managed to capitalise for a change. Confidence was high as we went to 8-2, taking the half convincingly.

Some desperate huck plays came off for Cobras, but it was neither enough to lift their team or to phase us. We won the second half 7-4, so that's 15-6 final score, the first time we have closed out a game before time cap.

We've beaten the Cobras 3 times now, and they have beaten us 3 times. We haven't beaten any other teams, but that's gonna change over the next 3 weeks!

Runway Fashion Show

In a pre-emptive strike some loyal readers may have already read that the HUC has received the new uniforms for all teams. Hence this blogger is pleased to announce that our jerseys have actually been first shown in a local Brisbane runway show much like this:

BUT IN BLOG FORM!!!!!

The first of our little creations has obviously got to be the iconic Heroes green shirt. The designers of this number felt it appropriate to stick to the lovely green that the club is known for. The new season style however has gone with the slogan "Bigger & Better" and that is reflected with the new portrayal of the incredible HUC on the shirt itself. The figure has been straightened up and the majestically thrown disc, now gracefully wraps itself around the shirt, bringing the eye to the rear of the garment.

The second team brand that the HUC created has been drifting in and out of local leagues for some time now. Having experienced rapid growth in our club numbers it was well over due that the Agent Orange team should get real jerseys. With the gradual branding elements coming through from the design team (ie the new Agent Orange figure) all was set to get orange back out there on the field. This beautiful top in what is called 'designer orange' has been loaded up, guns blazing by the incredible HUCs arch nemesis and wrapped around the torso. With great styling we here at the secret lair think these outfits will turn some heads and put lots of scores on the board.

The most recent team to join the HUC is the Discheads, the reigning BUML champions and subsequent benchmark of the league. If you dont know or havent heard before, the Discheads are actually an alien race of ultimate players that have come here to learn more about the human race. In this process these aliens were first recruited by the incredible huc to fight the fight against the evil agent orange. The designers of this jersey took inspiration from the galaxy and homeland of the discheads and created the logo to suit the feel of the race. The crop circle on the side is a reminder to the players of their new home here on Earth.

To finish the new catalogue of uniforms, the range could not be complete without the contribution and overall panties-nes of these dashing HUC branded shorts. With the players individual playing number right there on the right hand side of the shorts, wearing these will make you feel at home. Or maybe you ll just always wear these at home - not exactly sure on which one it is.

In today's day and age sometimes we can become too expectant of our governing bodies. We want information right now and sometimes its hard for others to keep up to the demand of everyday life.

Now, for your convience, one man (insert :: no its not me) stands above the rest and promises to maintain a website that will automatically display a leaderboard based on the recorded results of the matches. No more will you have to differentiate between Div 1 and Div 2 teams. No more will you wonder why Heroes are third last even though they have only lost 1 game. No more will you wonder why on earth QUTies appear to be the best Monday night team around, despite the fact they are in Div 2 (no offense).

You'll find the website at www.bumlladder.info. The official draw is still available from the BUML site, but it is fairly hard to read. Importantly you should know that bumlladder.info is not the offical BUML ladder but this still is, if you can decipher it. View the (unofficial) deciphered version here.

Tactic of the Week: The end-zone pass

That last pass into the end-zone is always the most difficult. We have all, at some point, been guilty of rushing a throw or celebrating a catch before we've caught it and turning it over. Here is my perspective on strategies to maximise scoring and minimise turn-overs.

Why do we turn it over?
There are two main reasons we turn it over in the end-zone: Space and Psychology.
When youre on the endzone line you only need to pass the disc half a metre to score and all too frequently we try to only pass it that half a metre to one of three cutters trying to get to that half a metre distance which is being clogged by their defenders as well while the dump is screaming at you and the sideline is screaming at you and the count on eight.

You will notice that the above sentence is long without any punctuation. It gets a bit confusing and frenetic to read, and this is what happens on the field near the end-zone. We crowd each other, everyone tries to get involved cutting all over the place, and the thrower's arousal levels shoot up. When you combine this with the tendency of both cutters and throwers to want to make it easy to score by passing it half a metre, the naturally limited space of the end-zone, and the extra pressure of a throw 'to score' and a catch 'to score', it becomes easy to see why there are so many turnovers in or near the end-zone.

How do we fix it?
There are a number of things that will help, first and foremost is:

Stay calm
Above all, stay calm. No matter how much a cutter gets frustrated with you, take your time and throw good options. You're in no rush, and there is no extra pressure on you. it would be the same if you were passing it out of your own end-zone. Remember that it's just a throw like any other you've done a hundred times.

Dump
Dump, swing, score. There's a reason the drill is called that, but how many teams do you see in game situations actually dumping and swinging it a few times before attempting the throw in? Lots of patience at utilising your dump will help you score. Handlers should be able to dump at 90-95%, so use it! Each team and player will have a preferred count or situation to dump in, which leads onto....

Have a plan
Too many teams assume that everyone knows what to do in the end-zone, and it ends up the usual frenetic scramble. The more disciplined your players are, and the more you create and implement a plan for scoring, the more often it will happen and the less you'll turn it over.

Use the space
The end-zone is (I only just did the maths..... weirds me out a bit) 666 square metres, and the longest possible throw (across diagonal corners) is 41.15m.
Most of us have adequate throws to cover any of this area, and should not be afraid to throw to a good cut.

What can cutters do?
Similarly, Cutters can help make things more efficacious by:

Knowing when to cut
One of my favourite things to do when I find myself in the end-zone is stand still and look around. Usually others will be cutting, and hopefully clearing, which then gives me the next cut. Knowing when to cut is helped if you...

Have a plan
As above. Have a plan, stick to it. And...

Clear out (re-stack)
Use good faking and 100% effort cuts. If you don't get it, bust back to the stack. Hard. This creates more room and easier throws for your teammates. Remember that it's a team sport, which one of you catches the disc doesn't matter, as long as someone does.

Use the space
If you use a three out, four in set up for end-zone plays, and you start with one player standing five metres out of bounds laterally (each side), and 2 players out of bounds deep, you have massive amounts of open space to cut into (remember that with out of bounds, both your last as well as your next contact must be with the field proper). Your job is to create high percentage options for your thrower, and you can be as creative as you want in doing so. Remember that half metre passes to clogged spaces are much, much harder than you would like to think. Sticking to a plan will help utilise the space.

In a nutshell
Stay Calm. Dump. Have a plan.

The last couple of Mondays have seen me rise from my bed to greet a cloudy day full of threats of a downpour. But it seems that today is different, today is the day the threats became reality. Keen Frisbee blog readers (trolls?) will have seen that the rain has lead to the closure of UQ and recently Annerley as well, with Griffith expected to follow shortly.

What does it mean for us? If you would indulge me for a second I will pull out, dust off and consult the Heroes Ultimate Club Guide to Life. It seems that and I quote "in times of trouble, when the outlook is dark, when the prospect of a regular league match has been torn asunder, the only option available to followers is simple. It is to visit a local drinking establishment."

This is where the HUC guide to Life finishes. Leaving the specifics up to any who would dare to don the esteemed mantle of HUC Party Officer. And as it happens, that would be me. Upon examination of previous material such the 5 P's, the 'other' 5 P's and when frisbee doesn't win; I would like to follow the tradition and invite everyone to Archive Beer Boutique from about 7pm onwards and it is located at 100 Boundary St, West End (the good pub below Uber).

This is a chance to get to know your fellow team and club members without the pressure and distraction of having to chase plastic. A chance to talk to that cute girl or boy from your team. A chance to wet your whistle on some good quality drinks or food if you desire ($10 gourmet burgers).

Skill of the Week- Attitude (What I've learnt from the best)

I love watching finals at Nationals. The superior skill, fitness, and structure is superb to watch, but one of the things I love watching is the attitude of the players. Watching these games always reminds me that top players still make the same mistakes I do: they get broken, they get beaten, they throw it away, they drop it.

The big difference between me and these players (apart from the skill and fitness) is what they do after any of these things. Where I get frustrated, down on myself and ruminate, these players do not. Where I feel like a failure, these players have more resilience. They use any lapse as immediate motivation and have a faster transition/reaction.

In the open final at nationals, one Colony player was wearing his heart on his sleeve, almost to the point of histrionics. Some of his reactions were unpleasant to watch, and had a visibly negative effect on his teammates. The effect of our attitude on our team is something we should never discount. To be the best players we can be, we need to use any frustration from errors as motivation to do better next time, rather than self-indulgently wallowing.

The most important thing I have learnt from watching the best is about attitude. Every player gets beaten and broken, throws away and drops the disc. The best players approach any game with the attitude of acknowledging and minimsing this, and only ever responding to disappointment with improvement. This is the attitude that I plan to emulate.

Browntown Takes One In The End Zone!!

After scoring early, Heroes fell asleep on the sideline and on-field with some uninspiring play and sloppy marking, allowing Slamtown to huck to unexpected receivers. Heroes were down 4-1.

With a demand to improve on the basics (completions, aka throwing and catching) and a request for more sideline talk, the quality of play lifted. A few Jangles to Bevan plays came off and Adam D went on to have a blinder, beginning with some hard puppy pressure to force throw aways. Adam used his reach (he has height, but have you ever seen him jump) to swat the disc away from the outstretched hands of receivers. He hit every dump, but my favourite Adam play was when George made a great cut under on Horo and Adam came streaming and screaming through to collect the Dishy in power posistion and wind-up that big arm of his to huck to score (Morrell receiving? on the back line in the middle).

The positivity definitely lifted and the sideline talk kept everyone in the game. I remember getting caught out early on with players streaming down my wing and no sideline talk, but this changed in the second third. I think Slamtown took the half after long discussions saw a spirited Fox backing down to a solid argument Slamtown's best politician.

There were some exciting moments, when we got SFC to stall count 9 a number of times, but they got away with stuff like scoobers to Jody and the traditional Heroes-mac-on to Al. James Larkin was one player we failed to shut down. For the amount of D's we got and shots we had, our conversion rate was very low.

Sebastian worked really hard in the second half, but the real Brown-town belonged to neither Sebastian or Jody, but that of little brother, not-the-rapper Chris Brown. Chris Brown had 16 attempts to score in the end zone. Often perceived as cutting hard, handlers would float it out in front of Chris, only to see him time and again, labouring, stumbling and seeing the disc float out the back of the end zone. This lead to much taunting. To claims that we thought he was cutting, Big Brother Sebastian lamented "People often think that about Chris?" Jamie was of usual harshness: "Are you going to catch it this time, Chris?" Yes, it reminded this blogger of those who had come before him. Like Trevor, Watto and Tomsteve, the young Ceasar seemed cursed.

Finally, I think it was Bevan, pulled one out of the sky and Chris was found all alone in the middle of the end zone. Bevan put it in at about the height where all our hearts were, the throat, with Chris finally obliging and taking a sitter. The crowd went wild!!! (*insert tumbleweed)

In the end I think we went down 14-10, but I may be wrong.

Heroes ladies at nationals!!

A number of the Heroes ladies represented Queensland as part of “Red Betty” the development team from Queensland's ladies' ultimate club, Black Betty. For the majority of these ladies, it was their first Nationals and the first time they had played a high level, multiple day tournament.

Red Betty, being a developmental team, were seeded second to bottom. Unfortunately, the bottom team pulled out of the competition a few weeks before. Red Betty were therefore seeded 15^th out of 15 teams.

One way of summarising Red Betty's results is to say that we held our seeded place, which is what a lot of teams aspire to do...

But to simply say that Red Betty came last is to discredit the hard work and development of the ladies that occurred over the weekend.

Above all else, I think the ladies walked away with an understanding of what high level ultimate really is. In Brisbane, unless you play these national level tournaments, there is just no high level ladies ultimate available to watch or play. Watching the ladies final, the Heroes ladies were able to appreciate that ladies ultimate is fast, it is aggressive (in the sense that the women attack the disc, do not give up and get fired up) and it is skilful. I hope that all the ladies implement this in to their league games (you have to play like it is high level ultimate to be able to create high level ultimate).

Heroes were represented by Jo Ashdown, Brianna Fyfe, myself (Robyn Dowley), Alana Folkes, Vanessa Brown, Adilia Murabito, and Chantelle Smith (apologies if I have left anyone off the list).

Even though only one week has passed since Nationals finished, the games and individual player's performances have honestly become a bit of a blur to me.

Some that I can remember:

All of the ladies keeping on running and not giving up, despite being tired.
Alana having sticky fingers and scoring a few points from wayward discs in the end zone!
Jo running and running – in the cup, going long, cutting to the right places when needed. Jo also has brilliant forehands which she pulls out to use occasionally. Jo you should force your way into the handling line on Discheads on occasion to build your confidence in your throws. They are there, you just need to know it!
Bri's constantly improving handling skills – I honestly think you are already a great handler, you just need to find that confidence! Bri was also another reliable cutter who bailed me out of a high stall count on more than a few occasions. Bri was also really great at keeping the spirit levels of the whole team up, especially me when I had a bit of a breakdown on day 2.
Chantelle is another great receiver. She is quick and is fast developing a sense of field awareness. With a bit more experience she will be an unstoppable receiver.
Vanessa came into the team at a very late stage, as we needed players desperately and she was kind enough to volunteer herself. This put her at a bit of a disadvantage as she did not have the build up of skills that the other ladies had acquired through the few months of regular training. However, she still managed to slot right into the team, picking up the few plays that we had and playing them efficiently. I also remember being on the sideline with Vanessa for a few points with Vanessa constantly calling to the on-field ladies, helping them with where they should be, calling out when their player was getting free in a zone etc. This was really encouraging to see as it is a very difficult task to get the players engaged in sideline play in ladies ultimate.
Adilia being her usual steady handler self. It was great to have another experienced, steady handler in the team.

I look forward to being able to see the continued development of these ladies, particularly through WUFL. And given the new skills these ladies have gained, I am pretty sure defending champions Wonder Women will have a fantastic season!

In a week of sore muscles and tired legs, the bpl continued as per normal and heroes stood against the new kids on the block the bandidos (sporting their striped alternate strip, one that I personally enjoyed more than their regular kit).
To be perfectly honest and in a strange turn of regular events, Heroes went in favourites and we certainly expected an easier win. But walking up to the far field (after being kicked off 3b as the rumour mill suggested to me) I past some fairly experienced throwers putting their cleats on so I thought I would have to play through my own personal illness. But in saying this the young Bandidos are very....Raw. And i didnt think we d have to much hassle dealing with them. And indeed we didnt with five mins to go at 12-8. Then, and whether it was due to tired legs or just not enough focus we let bandidos put five on the board to take the game to 13 all at hard time cap.
Readers will notice I went straight to the point (the end of the game) because alas the ultimate played was not at he highest quality and the game just played out.
Credit to the bandidos getting their first points in BPL.
To be perfectly honest Heroes will come out next time our two teams meet and the next game wont be so tight.

Skill of the week- Reading Spin

Have you ever found that you have perfect positioning, your defender is two metres behind you, you're calm and focused, you attempt a one handed catch and it simply bounces out of your hand?

Have you ever found that you don't expect to catch a disc, but you throw a hand out anyway, and the disc just seems to stick in your hand?

Most of the time this has to do with which direction the disc is spinning. Learning to read how the disc is spinning is as important as learning how to read the flight of the disc, and this post will be dealing with how to do just that.

First of all, when catching (and especially one handed) you need to stop two forces, the linear force, and the rotational force. To catch a spinning disc one handed, you need to catch it at the back (to stop the linear force) and on the side of the disc spinning toward you (to stop the rotational force). It is, actually, that simple. Here's a diagram to help visual people:

So how do you know which way the disc is spinning? Regardless of whether someone is lefthanded/right handed, or throwing forehand or backhand, the disc will always spin toward the thrower. If you go out and watch someone throwing, you'll see what I mean.

One of the very best things about learning to read spin is that once you get it, you don't have to actively think about it when throwing. You will automatically adjust your catches to cater for how it is spinning. Spend an intensive few throwing sessions practicing to read spin and catch the disc one handed, and you'll be amazed at how your catching improves.

Heroes at Nationals from an (insider's) outsider perspective.

HUC had a truly outstanding representation at Nationals across a number of teams. Given I was able to play with and against a few of you, I thought I'd give a brief review of what I saw.

Quoll
Dan and Gavin acquitted themselves in outstanding manner with the Tassie team. They both slotted seamlessly into the structure of Quoll and had a number of critical and inspiring moments on both O and D. Dan was his usual irrepressible self, constantly cutting hard and going for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th efforts. Dan took a crucial layout grab backing up for a poor throw, and Quoll went on to score the point. Gavin similarly had fantastic positioning throughout the weekend, with very solid throwing and catching. Although an injury slowed him down in a few games, a standout moment was a great read and top-of-the-jump D off a threatening throw.

Firestorm Ignition
Playing for 15th was a fierce and competitive game, and I got to see a few Heroes in action that I hadn't seen before. Jamie had a great game, taking a number of fantastic grabs and getting a D or two at critical moments. His talent is very clear and it will be good to watch him become a superstar. Adam Dowley was solid in handling and a lynchpin of Ignition's attack. Safe hands at the back with reliable throws, it's great to see Adam at HUC.
Sebastian continues to improve every time I see him play and this was no exception. He took two super grabs that I can recall, one a full stretch layout to score. In this game, Sebastian's confidence and assuredness was the most improved aspect of his game.
Although I was often too busy grinding my teeth to notice the opposition, I do recall Chris using his super-leap and hands of iron to take a screamer of a one-handed catch above a pack of friend and foe alike, all of whom where comparatively standing still.
Super-sub Carl came on for a point, and I had the pleasure of marking him. Ignition scored, and I didn't shut Carl down well enough, so he takes the points on that one. Apparently two stuffed ankles trumps a tweaked hamstring.

The Betties
To my chagrin and disappointment, I didn't get to watch any of the Heroes girls playing at Nationals. The feedback I got was they enjoyed themselves and got a lot out of it. I'd love to hear more from those who played/watched.

It is great to see so many HUC players out and about at national tournaments. I can't wait for more!

AO vs Tsunami Match Report

Well given that Nationals is done and dusted it seems that there is a bit more time to grab a hold of. That means more blogging. No doubt there will be numerous posts regarding Nats on the various blog sites we link to, and hopefully one or two on the HUC site, but for now I offer you a brief match report from our Div 2 BUML game.

Now as is the case with the other two Heroes BUML teams we had a number of players backing up from Nats and surprisingly none were tired/slow but rather excited to have another game, including myself with a badly strained knee that restricted me to 50% pace and an awkwardly painful limp. We were however missing Bev and Em to illness and Sam (with good results in his school's cross country today) to study. Recognising only a handful of faces in Tsunami I was not expecting the level of play that they brought. Every player on their team seemed very confident with the disc which was wonderful to see given they are a majority of beginners. Because of this they started strong and it took a while for us to get right in the game. Eventually we were hitting our strides as a team using both unders and longs effectively. Dstrel played an excellent game with dynamic handling and front of stack movement. Vanessa beat her girl every time providing easy options for the handlers, and ate up every disc - high, low, whatever. Emily S scored a brilliant goal (her first I think). Alex looked comfortable with his field presence and was getting the disc often because of this. He was also putting the force on the right side every time without having to stop and think about it! At half time we set a goal of not letting our man get free when on D and as a team we achieved this, which was my personal highlight of the game. Because we played at UQ it was a disappointingly shorter game, with the final result 11-7 to Tsunami.

One thing the shorter game did bring about was the desire for more Disc. Almost unanimously the team cried out in our post game debrief for Sunday training.

With the talk about this Heroes BPL team needing to stand up and play this year, the boys finally put the training and skills learnt over the summer to use. We faced the under strength black cobras (minus tracthor and Calain) and after winning the toss and starting on o we went on a 5 or so to nil run on the snakes. In fact I dont remember much about this game, having been rendered to a concussion by Reeces right shoulder (straight to my chin). I think the half time score was 8-1. After half cobras picked up their game and started hucking away (Reece to finn) to make some scores. Infact they went on a 5 point run to come back to within 2. Heroes managed to keep this 2 point lead to eventually win on time cap 11-9 (not really sure, I had a sore head)

Promising moments was Adam Dowley on defensive, seeing him completely horizontal but other than that, I really tuned out with a thumping headache. Anyone feel like I missed anything, comment away.

Why Heroes Men Should See Some Finals Action This Season

With my new role over at the BUB, I've had little to post Heroes-centric sentiment on the interwebs. So here it is.

The punters are saying we're going to finish 4th (Stefan, Gref). This is despite winning 1 game in our last 2 seasons. With 9/12 of our boys training with Firestorm, it's fair to expect vast improvement this season. With 2 losses out of 2 on the board and Dojo looming, one could say that we haven't had the best start to the season.

However, Dojo, Bugs and Slamtown seem set to carry on their merry way to a Top 3 finish (probably in that order). So how are we to secure the fourth spot and get our first taste of finals action?

I would suggest that we have to win 4 games minimum. Heroes must beat the largely unknown Cobras in round 4 and again in round 9. The Cobras haven't proven anything yet, beating the new kids on the block 15-1, but bowing out in quick-time against the Dojo Mojo, 15-5 after being in a 5-5 headlock. Their performance in Round 3 against the Buggers will be worth keeping an eye on.

The other team to beat twice is Los Bandidos, who have shown improvement after their embarassing start, with a better scoreline of 9 - 15 against the Bugs. We come up against them for the first time after Nationals, which is a dangerous time, with Heroes having 10 players playing at Nationals. We face them again in the last round, and they will no doubt be well improved by this stage.

Is 4 wins enough? If we beat those teams twice, one of them will have to beat two top 3 teams to challenge. Beating one of the top 3 would mean big things for Heroes. I believe that with all players available and on our game, we are capable of beating anyone. How long will it take for us to gel?

This is, of course, a lot of speculation. But it's fun. For now, it's the old cliche of one week at a time. We've gotta be hungry for that first win in a long time. We have a chance to prove our depth next week when we come up against the Giants from Dojo.

Slamtown

Thursdays game saw the Heroes take the line against the big shooting slamming flatballers from the coast.
After last weeks lack lustre performance, the green machine came out with a strong will to bring the intensity and when we got a turn over on the first point from a (insert) wayward stef throw, we capitalised and put in the end zone for 1-0. Then throughout the first half the game was relatively even with slamtown breaking us to take a 2 point lead at half. However the difference between the two teams was the initial pull on the point. I cant remember how many times we turned the disc over in our own half (and endzone) because of a great pull and chase, clamming us inside the endzone with our stack not realising it, and being to deep. With Adam out our handling line was a bit weaker and the gold coast zone worked well for the most part. BUT as soon as we broke that cup, I think slamtown will agree we walked all over them to score freely (for those 7 times.. ) But still and yes this sounds lame the score line didnt reflect how hard the game was played, with our game finishing last of the three and with one memorable 10min point. On a positive note defensively we didnt let the orange 'shooters' loose and kept the D fairly tight all evening. As soon as we stop shooting ourselves in the foot with dumb turnovers (myself included) Heroes will start putting wins on the board.
As ever this season theres no 'easy' games with most teams being able to turn up on their day and win. Next week is no different when Heroes vs the well lubricated machine that is Dojo Mojo.
Memorable moments for the game was Ye Old brown town connection being ever sweet as usual. OH AND... James getting skied by probably the shortest man in the league, Danny. Well done dan. In comparison its like thisguy in red beating this guy in blue (wait is that a Red Vs Blue reference!?!)

There are a few amongst us that have volunteered to help coaching from 2-3pm, and also some of us that are going to be playing in the "exhibition match" from 4-5pm.

Sensei Stephen Cameron has not been seen by the ultimate community, not even his closest students. Mr Colangelo is reported to have said at a Heroes event "No one has seen him since the BPL final... I don't know what's going to happen next season". Perhaps this is why Cola was spotted training with the Green Martians on Sunday afternoon at Oakman Park.

The team rumoured to be named Gref's All-stars is likely to see a name change. The All-Chumps are likely to register a team of rookies, using BPL as a training ground for Uni games later this year. Contrary to popular rumour, this team will not include the African-American Rapper, Chris Brown.

SFC player JoelE has signed a deal with the Gold Coast Suns. He joins a prestigious group of cross-code experiments, including Carmichael Hunt, Israel Foloua and Leroy Loggins and Shane Warne. During the summer months, Joel will be bowling spin for Australia. Although physically suited to pace bowling, and despite never having played cricket at a representative level, Chairman of Selectors Andrew Hilditch is believed to announce shortly, that "He may as well give it a crack".

Oh yeah!! I played some beach ultimate on the weekend and it was so sweet!

Sunday, 30th Jan, training will resume at 3:30pm. Venue is TBA, as Firestorm may have an engagement at Oakman.

Sunday, Feb 6 & 13 will be training for selection for BPL Heroes, details coming soon.

Summary of Beach Ultimate:

A team of Heroes who had mostly never played ultimate on the beach were pooled up against some very strong competition, BUD - the kids from Byron who were mostly conceived on the beach, and Venturing North, a bunch of Dirty Mexicans (Southerners) who had travelled to the GC with the intention of being selected for Worlds 2011 in Italy.

Running on the beach was hard, and at first it seemed like a daft idea. Hitting the deck seemed to be the only kindness. Hucking was largely futile, and required extra preciscion to float the disc on the wind. Anything with too much zing would sail off into the distance.

We went down in competitive fashion to BUD in the first match, before being slaughtered by Venturing North, only just managing to keep the budgey smugglers and bikinis on (we scored 1 point). VN could run on the beach, and so they got away from us.

After our first 2 games, we had about 3 hours break. We came out refreshed and with extra Rudolph, of the Bevan Stuart variety, and really stuck it to Undulate. I believe we were up 4-0, with a lot of fast passing and give go. Notty didn't like being down, so they put a zone on us and clawed their way back, taking the half, and eventually the game. I remember lying in the sand at the end of the game, feeling my heart pounding way too fast, and then realising we had another game.

The final game was fittingly played against Rhubarb Scoundrels, the team that Steph had put together, a mix of Heroes and French Speakers. It was a lot of fun to play against the likes of Cola, Starkey, Baker and Steph (did I miss any Heroes?), and to beat them by 2 points ;). I remember some amazing layout D's from Bev and James (with good marker pressure from Yours Truly). I can remember great moments from everyone.

Merry Christmas Training

On behalf of the HUC Community I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. With that said, although work seems to slow down people seem to get more and more busy. They worry about Christmas presents, shopping, preparations, planning. When there is so much going on, Sunday afternoon seems like a great time to get things done, right? Wrong! Give yourself a Christmas present this Sunday by coming down to the last HUC training session of the year!

Get to Oakman Park at 3:15, a drill at 3:30 and an action packed hour long game at 4 to round out the session and the year. At this stage this is the last planned Heroes Training session of the year so get down and enjoy yourselves!

Awards Night Wrap Up

A few tales have surfaced post HUC Awards Night, some true, others not so. To prevent you from living in doubt and uncertainty any longer I present here an accurate account of the evenings proceedings:

The Agent Orange made an appearance, assassinating many (beers). Award winners such as Matt Boevink and Vanessa Brown who were not in attendance are presumed dead, perhaps falling in battle against the AO.

Glamour couple Panties and Sonter arrived fashionably late.

The Vego Force united against the forgetful League's Club, defeating them and procuring for themselves an extraordinary pasta dish.

DJ Rickybeatz danced himself into submission, but was able to party boy and thrust countless others before being escorted home.

Founding father and esteemed guest Huddy Fuller teleported himself back to his base in Van Diemen's Land at the night's end.

Party Liason Officer Chris Brown moved the after party to the within-walking-distance Regatta where he was denied the delicious James Squire amber ale on tap due to his own clumsiness of leaving his ID at home. Big Brother Sebastian smoothly attempted persuading the bouncer, but to no avail.

And despite convincing the bartender that I was a big winner, with Bevan's trophy in hand, she still made me pay for my drinks....

Heroes Ultimate Club - Recruitment Awards 2010
Daniel Strelan - for his leadership of the club over many years and for his passion, which has either started or stoked the ultimate fire within so many Heroes players. His recent receival of AFDA recruiter of the year highlights the ability this man has to bring people into the club. His enthusiasm and efforts are nearly unmatched by anyone in the HUC.

Joshua Weier - for his creation of Discheads. At the time his leadership was an essential part of this team being formed which consisted of an almost entirely fresh roster and now boasts a healthy bench (maybe too healthy?). Josh put great effort into pre season training (season 1) to give these beginners a solid foundation on which to build, to the point where they convincingly took the BUML div2 flag after only 2 seasons together. Although Discheads weren't a part of Heroes during Josh's on field time, they certainly are now, and we owe their existence and much of their development to him.

Matt Boevink - for his tireless (and so far as the scoreboard goes mostly rewardless) efforts in coaching the Heroes BPL team through 2 seasons, as well as running several coaching sessions throughout the year for the benefit of the entire club. Many Heroes have learnt a lot from him this season.

Heroes Ultimate Club - Culture Award 2010
Carl Behrendorff - for his creation of the blog, as well as the countless hours put in to designing logos and creating posters for tournament prizes. The blog has been the central hub of Heroes communication. It has helped in shaping the culture of the club (history, awards, social) and gives us a presence in the wider ultimate community, with a regular readership coming from all over the world, primarily in Brisbane, but certainly not just limited to the HUC. Carl has conducted interviews and season reviews that are both entertaining and informative. It has been a major contributor to the health of the HUC.

Heroes Ultimate Club - Outstanding Male Award 2010
Adam Beu ‘Jangles’ - for his input to the Heroes BPL team, mostly on the field. He has been the only Firestorm player to come across from another team and help us. He has been enthusiastic about showing us the ropes and the level we need to play at, and has stuck with Heroes despite countless disappointing scores. He has been essential to the workings of the Heroes BPL side.

Heroes Ultimate Club - Outstanding Female Award 2010
Robyn Parkinson - for her creation of the Wonder Women team and encouragement of Heroes women to play in the WUFL. Her presence and voice has been the primary influence in many of our women making the jump from 'casual' to 'interested in more'. As captain of WW she also led these ladies to take the premiership in their first season.

This year our little club has seen many highs and lows, and some people have found themselves caught up on results and performance from time to time. After conversation with The Vice it seems obvious however that the success and health of this club is dependent not on wins vs losses but rather on us being excellent to each other. Regardless of how well we do in tournaments to come, and whether the BPL team gets some wins or not, and even if we never make it to WUCC 2014, it will still be awesome being a part of this group.

In my concluding remarks at last night's awards spectacular, I wish I had said the following:

A thanks to all the outside people who have encouraged and showed their support to heroes players individually, and to the club as a whole. People who supported the BPL team despite opposition and those who came down on Sunday afternoons and coached us through various aspects of the game stand out to me the most. Your contribution has been very valuable.

And a huge thanks to Gavin Croft, who has put a huge amount of effort and passion into the club over the year, and in particular in recent months with the vote to become incorporated and everything that goes along with that. The way Gavin selflessly goes about the things that need to be done, the way he conducts himself on and off field and his enthusiasm for Ultimate and life in general makes him a great leader of the club. There is no doubt in my mind that he will continue to do a fantastic job in his position as President of HUC in 2011. Thanks Gav!

It's time for a celebration!

It's that time of year again, and for the first time the Heroes Ultimate Club are putting on a little celebration! Will this be the party of the year? Who knows... but what I do know is that the best parties are made by the people that attend them. Thankfully, we have 30 keen Heroes members descending on Wests Rugby ground this evening striving to make this the best HUC party ever!

How will the evening be structured? Will Laura S retain her duties and to an extent chair the evening? Will the HUC president address the masses and instill in everyone a sense of pride, belonging and outright enthusiasm to bring in the new year with? Will Carl ramble on seemingly endlessly, reminiscing about the one time he was able to play a game and not get injured, or perhaps the one time he was able to throw a huck assist without the disc curving away from the receiver (jk Carl ily)? Will Foxxy prove once and for all that Canadians are indeed the better drinkers? Will Chris' Party Liason Officer skills be put to the ultimate test and will he have the foresight to organise the kick on?

All of these questions and more will be answered tonight! Will you be there??? I... wouldn't want to miss it.

Special trainings- basics that rarely get taught

Hi Everyone,

While I'm in Brisbane I will be running some special trainings to help improve some of the basic skills amongst Heroes Club players. There will be 3 parts to this series.

Part 1- Throwing
There are many small improvements that everyone can make on their throws, but it's hard to make a change and consistently use it. So to help with this, I will be running 4-5 throwing sessions through the coming week. They will be centrally located (Roma st or Botanical gardens), and morning or afternoon depending on what suits the most people who are interested. Could everyone who is interested please email me (huddyfuller@gmail.com) so I can determine numbers and what suits people.

Part 2- Catching
Not as straight forward as it seems. There are many aspects to improving catching, and we will go over these at training on Wednesday evening, 7pm at Oakman; naturally followed by a game.

Part 3- Game Play & Cohesion (TBC)
This session will focus on some elements to improve game-play as well as playing cohesion and positional awareness. A time will be announced when this session is confirmed.

Future format for 2011 BUML

There has been speculation and whispers in various frisbee circles about the format of BUML for 2011. The major change to which I would like to discuss is the combining of all three divisions in one timeslot. I would like to share my opinion on this matter and then open the floor to anyone else wishing to constructively talk about this.

Obviously there are pro's and cons to any league format, but I think this would be a bad move for BUML and would be of detriment to the Heroes club plans. Recently, the Heroes Div 2 teams have been gradually progressing through the ranks, climaxing this week in Discheads' triumph in winning the Div 2 final. This season we also entered a Div 1 team which had a season of learning what it takes to play top division mixed ultimate.

As we have previously discussed, Heroes plans to be at Mixed Nationals next year, which will mean training as a team, and taking advantage of every opportunity to play together at a high level before them. One of the ways which we planned to do this was to enter our nationals team in the Div 1 competition and play together every week. However, if everything went to one timeslot, people would have to leave behind their Div 2 teams (which are just starting to become more enjoyable) to play in a new team starting from scratch.

I don't know about you, but to me that sounds terrible. Another con for this merge is the fact that elite players who currently help out new teams (which is incredibly valuable as it gives new players a chance to see what to aspire towards) would have to choose to either charitably help out new teams, or play the top level mixed competition to challenge themselves and play at their potential. Creating this divide lowers the standard of both divisions.

These are my thoughts. Would love to hear the counter arguments.

Discheads battle it out over the arch-nemesis

For many it would seem a lifetime ago since last Monday evening as Dyspnoeics fought out the d2 BUML title against HUCs own Discheads. The blog talk was a buzz (not this buzz) and many thought the game would be a landslide if the BUB tipping was to be trusted but with the Dyspnoeics fielding a very strong line with the likes of coops, jimmy, anna and suz to name a few, DHs were going to have an up hill battle.On top of that Bev was dealing with the old shin splints and two girls (lisa and sarah) out due to injury. But nothing could wreck the DHs spirit. In fact craig left home at 5.45pm to get to the field to be sure to be warmed up and ready to go. Well done son.
I wont try and amuse readers with a score trail but I will highlight some great passages of play that I remember from the side line. One of those was a score from craig where he was playing long against a zone made a good hard long cut, then doubled back under losing his mark and received the disc. He dishie dumped and sprinted long to the end zone to take a great huck thrown around the cup to score. That was a great passage of play. Bev should also be commended with his handling all night and esp his D pressure was outstanding. I saw a horizontal Bevan layoutD to block a scoring pass, with that the DHs lifted and extended their lead to be too far in front of Dysnoeics. Last possession was called and the dark blues easily controlled the disc to score, but too little to late. The game was Discheads. This capped off a stella season and congratulations to all DHs players.

The Social Event of the Year - Update

A lot has happened this year. Heroes have developed into more than just a random group of people playing Frisbee and I for one feel like it is time to celebrate. I would like to invite all of the Heroes players, partners, and affiliates to come along and help celebrate the year at the first Heroes Ultimate Club Awards Nights.

This momentous event will be held at West Bulldogs Rugby Club at Toowong Memorial Park (along Sylvan Road where we used to train) on Friday the 3rd of December starting from 6pm. The cost is $30 per person. Dinner is included. Dress code is Cocktail Dress (Informal).

The Opposition - Dyspnoeics (A closer look.. please?)

Dyspnoeics have been around longer than the Heroes, with the team forming
in S1 2006. I know this because Bevan and I played a few games with them
before I went on a hiatus, returning to the formation of Huddy's Heroes in the Summer of 2007.

My vague memory tells me that it was based around the likes of Andy Lankowski, that other Andy and Latitia (or was that a different team), Dan Blacklock?? I'm just guessing here. I remember another McNaughton being involved, don't remember who that would have been. We were pretty hit and miss in that season..

So come on, someone give us some history on Dyspnoeics. They deserve the spotlight. Have they ever won a BUML/YUFL premiership? Who are they? Where do they come from? When did Sauce and Baker join?

Female Discheads = The New Wave of Ultimate in Brisbane - A force to be reckoned with.

With Wonder Woman Winning the Women's Premiership this season and Discheads now in the BUML Grand Final, the title to this post may carry some clout.

A few of the top girls in Brisbane joined a Heroic core, mostly made up of Dischead Women to create the winning formula for that premiership. Again, these girls are involved with a bunch of boys who are aiming for Firestorm selection this season.

They say that mixed ulitmate is all about the women (by 'they' I mean those female types). We'll see if that's true tonight.. I hope that it is!

Keeping up with the BUB

This was actually on my mind about 2 days ago, and now JdR has revisited his nickname poll. Our club/friends has/have a certain style of dishing out nicknames. I think I'm pretty responsible for a few of them. Spaz was my invention, or should I say, evolution, as was Hans, and I was certainly around the traps when Mick became Rick.

The trick is evolution. Take the name one step further. So as a 10 year old, when the kids were calling Sebastian Seb, or Sebas.. it seemed easy to progress / digress to Spaz. I'm sorry Spaz. It's only been 15 years.

Hanz is a more modern evolution. Her friends were calling her "Lans". One night I said "Oh hurro Hanz!", in the style and manner of Kim Jong Il as portrayed so brilliantly in Team America. So Alana is now named after the Swedish Diplomat, Hans Blix, not this Hans or this hans.

Rick happened when Sebastian started putting an R before people's names. What an odd thing to do! I was Rhinny for a while, which is of course short for Dinny which comes from Danny from Daniel. You could even say Ring Dings. Or Pepsi. But I digress. The brilliant thing about Rick is that we have an Uncle Rick, who is quite popular in UQ religion and philosophy circles and google searches for Strelan.

Discheads have made the BUML final in a close match over the other green mixed heroes team. Also we should say Agent Orange sadly went down in a close one too after leading much of the game.

Not so recently, Sensei declared on the DojoMoJoBlog that reading match reports was tiresome. It has also been said that JdR's controversial posts are waning. Steve juiced up his column with some BPL related gossip, Jason hit back with a tongue in cheek look at previous controversy, only to be mistaken for an attack on the LD. JdR's comments were fuelled by The Mayor of Slamtown, who regularly makes outlandish comments on his teams blog.

Now occasionally, bloggers get in trouble for seemingly criticizing those in administration roles. What's often forgotten is that we do this for FUN, and in stirring the pot, we may not fully believe what we say but it's sometimes worth looking at things in a different light. I think that this is a lot of fun, and it helps our little ultimate community feel more important. For this reason, I present to you the big names in ultimate blogging.

1. The Mayor

Stefan "Spaz" Rappazzo is a Mayor of a small town who is constantly campaigning for the next election. Lots of noise and fanfare, outrageous claims and promises, absolutely ridiculous persona (on the blogosphere). He has implemented one very important and strong policy, and that is the weekly rolling out of the BPL Power Rankings. Each week, The Mayor gives a candid, albeit SFC-biased opinion on how the teams are performing. We applaud him for this and predict another term in office for Spaz (not to be confused with Sebastian Brown of HUC).

2. Sensei

When Heroes first joined the BPL, I was told "No one really listens to Steven Cameron". This is a shame, as he often has some well-thought-out ideas when it comes to BPL administration. Sensei takes on the villian persona and runs with it, dishing up "Courier-mail style" gossip on a very irregular basis (last post 1 month ago). Sensei probably won't read this, as he's only concerned with Dojo news, which is actually quite interesting when the use of video is incorporated.

Sensei has claimed that "Byes s*ck". We know that forfeits are even worse, so maybe it's time for Dojo to assimilate into other teams, as they narrowly avoided another forfeit in the final game. (Here is a great example of a blogger saying something for controversy's sake.. not a serious suggestion but an interesting prod)

How did this end up sounding so bad? I appreciate Steven's input into a discussion, it's entertaining and often-times solid.

3. JdR

The King. JdR has come under fire lately for making assumptions for the sake of a good news piece. I dig his style. While this has directly effected Heroes leadership in the past, it was uneducated responses from our members that was the most irritating. The King of innuendo, and not only the sexual type. Jason uses the "royal we" or "we at the stately BUB mansion" to convey a tongue-in-cheek meaning. A lot of his "controversial" pieces may not have 100% accurate details, but they bring attention to an issue that may otherwise be ignored. It's best to think about what he is really trying to achieve before you get too worked up.

4. Carl

Carl is the founder of this incredible blog. His grammatical errors and poor spelling at times give us something to snicker about, and some of his sporting jargon often leaves me wondering whether he has used it correctly (the sayings in themselves are strange). Carl likes to blog about himself and his lovely fiancee Laura. This is all entertaining for those inside the club, and we thank Carl for putting us on the map and keeping the wheels running. Well done champ.

5. Kaitlin

It's a scientific fact that female comedian's aren't funny (go on, name one), but that's usually in reference to stand-up and not blogging. If Kaitlin has a blog, I'm unaware of it, but her comments on the Dojo and BUB blogs have been provocative, riotous, scathing, juicy and pretty spot on. More please!

Now I've spent an hour bringing this to who? I find myself asking "Why?". My novice linking will probably fail anyway and render most of this useless. I'm sorry.

Discheads progress @ the expense of their green family

The first semi final between Discheads and Heroes was poised to be an interesting game given the last two outings these teams had. DHs winning easily both occasions, but this was finals ultimate and nothing before matters.

AND WHAT A GAME WE GOT.

DHs came out early from the blocks and quickly broke us and put a score on to lead 2-0. Heroes were somewhat flustered and put a strong zone on the DHs and clogged the disc very well. We marched to 4-2 to take the lead and force the DHs to have a time out. Oh but before that Sarah from discheads became the latest casualty from Annerllys field 3a (or b which ever is the pot holely field) and did her ankle.
The two teams traded points I think to about 8-6. Then DHs put the after burners on and steam rolled the green Heroes to win in the end 12-10.

The game was really played in two patches of dominance. Heroes played very well in the first half of the game and DHs brought the intensity in the later stages. Well played DHs. I said everything that needed to be said in the circle after the game. Get out there next week and give the Heroes Ultimate Club our first BUML league championship.

Growth of the Heroes Club in 2008 - 2010

JdR's got some interesting numbers and graphs over on the Brisbane Ultimate Blog but today we thought it might be nice to crunch some numbers, make some graphs and analyse the infection of the Heroes virus in Brisbane Ultimate.

The mission statement of the Incorporated Heroes Ultimate Club (or iHUC as I will soon regret coming up with) is "To play, promote and develop fun, skilled and spirited Ultimate". Up until 2010 this grass-roots movement has solely been seen in Div 2 BUML. This year, however, has seen the Heroes club field 5 teams in Div 2 BUML (across the 2 seasons), a Div 1 team, a premiership winning WUFL team and a BPL team in each season. On top of this we have entered a team into Halibut, Brisbane Indoor Championships, Mixed Nats Qualifiers and 2 teams in Lovefest. In a couple years we might come back and analyse these other leagues and tournaments but today lets focus on BUML.

This first chart above shows the massive growth of Heroes in BUML Div 2 in the past 2 years. Do you think this is a story that may have influenced the growth of Frisbee in Brisbane as seen on JdR's charts?

Our second chart here shows the percentage of Heroes players against the total number of players in Div 2 BUML. So far it has peaked at 21.70%, which means that just over 1 in every 5 players play for a Heroes team.

What will happen if this percentage continues to increase? A higher chance of trophies in the cabinet? A Heroes league? To be honest I don't think it would be healthy for this number to increase much higher. Realistically Heroes are just set to improve and work our way up through the other competitions. With Heroes vs Discheads in the upcoming semi final we are guaranteed to have a team in this season's grand final. If we can secure WUFL and Div 2 BUML perhaps next season we can really focus on making our mark in Div 1 and BPL.

Give us your thoughts, be brutally honest. Or perhaps just give congratulations once more to Dan on his AFDA recruiter of the year award.

EDIT: Here's one more graph, apparently some people are confused comparing Heroes numbers vs the Total numbers, so I've done a pie chart to represent Heroes vs Others

In this second form of graph you add the percentage of Heroes players to the percentage of Other players and you get the total. This is different to the first form of graph, because if you added the two values together you would get significantly more than 100%. If you wanted to, you could subtract the Heroes players from the Total players to give you the Other players. It's apples and oranges really.

The phantom no match for the incredible HUC

Last nights match between GWW and the Heroes in the BUML was a good one, as expected.
Heroes managed to start the game with 5, whilst both Chaddy and Tomsteve were running to the line. The first point was a bit of shambles really. We played a puppy zone, but whilst Tomsteve joined us, Chaddy was still sitting in the endzone doing his laces... After watching a huck come from the GWW he was quickly up on his feet, whilst I was chasing it down next to Justin. Fortunately the wind blew it to far away from a contest and chaddy picked up to play on.
We quickly broke up and took a lead 1-0. The GWW broke back up wind in reasonable fashion to make it 1-1. Both teams played a heavy zone all night which made handling pretty fun, considering our dumping focus at training the previous day. Heroes managed to get out to an early two point lead @ 3-1 until the GWW clawed it back to be up 6-4. The game was hanging in the balance and Heroes called a timeout. It was a good call for us playing with no girl subs and only 1 male sub. After the time out Heroes started to click. We put some good passes together to rip that cup apart. Meagan found a great distributer role, deliberately hanging back to receive the poppers pass out and quickly off loaded to others streaming past. It was good to see Brad pulling down more long hucks, just now having to work on the next pass : P
After the game GWW said they just couldnt keep up with the green Heroes and that was what got us over the line. We put something like 8 points on in a row. GWW really deserved to win all their placing games. From coming up from the B pool and pushing all the teams they play, I think next year we'll have to watch out for the ghosts. Final score 12-8 to Heroes

Finals review

A/O Vs Griffith Go Gos

This has to be an easy tip. The orange have put some good performances in of late and the GoGo's have been improving a lot with the guidance of some experienced players, but this time I think A/O will be too much.

Frisky Time Vs MYellow

Well this is a interesting match. MY hasn't beaten the Frisky Time yet this season. In their last game they fell agonizingly short losing by 1. My tip this finals series? Well it depends on which FT turns up. FT to win (assuming their star pickups show)

Heroes Vs Ghost Who Walks
Well I think this will be the game of the round. Yes I know we're biased here @ HUC but let me explain.
1. Ive got insider news on the Poachers Vs Dyspneoics game
2. Im gonna tip Discheads to get up easy
3. Heroes only won by 2 in a come from behind game last time.
4. We have got some injuries clouds and work related planned no shows
Im gonna tip with my heart for a Heroes win, but certainly open the comment trail for some smack on this one.

Discheads to win. Always when aL is playing a tipper must account for the aL factor but it seems this year the babies just haven't been able to pull it over the line, with losing games going down by 1 or 2 and the wins by only a slim margin also. Fattys finger wont help the babies cause either. Plus most of the girls from DHs have come off the Wonderwomen WUFL grand final win. Tipping for a 5+ win.

Inside sources suggest a possible gift will be presented to Dyspneoics. Apparently too many med students DanB??

Last Monday saw two of the Heroes Ultimate Club teams face off against each other. Heroes vs. Discheads. Heroes were playing for redemption, and frisbee justice after Discheads pipped Heroes 15-11 in their last clash.

Unfortunately for this match Heroes were struggling to field a full strength team and Dan "the man" Strelan was able to pick up for them to bolster their numbers. They started the match with a 4/3 women split. On the back of an extensive break from frisbee due to weather, Discheads were very keen to make a strong start. Discheads managed to race away to an 8-2 lead. There was some great looking plays from both sides, but Heroes were often unable to capitalize on the turnovers they forced. The final score was 15-5 to Discheads.

In this match I really felt as though the Discheads women stood up and announced their coming of age. Between Jo, Bri, Sarah, and Chantelle I think about 8 points were scored. Matt Schultz also featured heavily on the scoreboard with 3 of his own. This was possibly his best all-round performance of the season, well done Matt!

Thanks to Heroes for a great, competitive, well spirited match. We look forward to continuing this rivalry into the future. Hopefully you guys will get a win soon and will be able to back up all that "smack talk" you dished out earlier this year =p

AO Play Less Risky vs Frisky

Brief match report from Monday nights game:

Although there were 7 Agents at Annerley for start time (the 6.45 kickoff is hard for many to make) we began play with only 6 on the field as Adilia conducted her official whistle blowing duties. Frisky played 5/2 m/f at the beginning as that's all they had and we mixed it up a bit once Cola arrived from the GC playing 4/3 and 5/2 as people needed the sub.

The early stages of this game were tight. 9 consecutive points took place with both teams trading 1 for 1. Not happy to just trade points to the end, the Agents found some Orange Power and kicked things up a notch. The middle to end periods of the game saw us keep good control of the disc, execute some effective long throws and run tight tight tight D. My highlight was seeing (I think it was) Vanessa use the dump swing (which scored) where traditionally we would have rushed it down the sideline to our demise. As a team we finally seem to be a bit more patient with the disc, which I couldn't be happier about. Shout outs to both Robyn and Alana who continuously got free of their man (in the unisex sense of the word) particularly when making long cuts. From memory both were rewarded with goals for their efforts. Frisky Time played well too and (even when we were scoring point after point) remained calm and confident in their abilities, the result of which was some beautiful Ultimate. Final score 13-5.

The thing for AO to work on for the final series will be generating the flow of hard under cuts by knowing whose turn it is to cut and clearing out faster when you don't receive it. We are hitting our stride at the business end of the season, and will be looking to take out the pool b flag if this form continues.
