Dischead's Lovefest Details

Good morning all!

The Incredible HUC and I have been having some discussions of late and he has queried the sole blogpost regarding the Heroes' clubs efforts at Lovefest last weekend. I assured him that something would be done to rectify the situation and without further ado I will present an accurate and sober recount of the weekends proceedings.

Match 1 - Discheads vs UQ AMUC

This game saw DH against the UQ mixed nationals team. With the help of a few handy pick-ups namely Buzz, Matty Stubbs, and Ed "Danger" Dangerous we managed to gain a comfortable lead and maintain it until the final whistle. End score was 9 - 5. This game we played relatively well as we were fresh, enthusiastic, and keen to impress in what was for most of us our first or second frisbee tournament. UQ played really well, unveiling a new woman named Janique (spelling?) from South America who was exceptional and as always the massively tall Justin played really well. UQ were probably let down a bit by the fact that their fearless leader Nathan was the Tournament Director and wasn't able to play because of his duties.

Match 2 - Discheads vs Slamtown Flatball Club

In hindsight, this was probably our best game of the day. Although we lost, we put forward some very tough questions to the eventual tournament runner's up. We had them guessing at a 2-0 lead after relatively few minutes but then allowed them back into the game and to get a break up and take the half at 6-4. From there we kept the margin of two points to the very end and made some good defensive points but lacked the composure to turn these into a string of points. The final score was 9 -7? to Slamtown. I have to also mention that the spirit shown in this game by Slamtown was exceptional.

A funny incident in this game was when Kev called an injury sub because he thought he pulled his groin. While limping to the sideline he threw in a cartwheel to try and "shake it out". He claimed that the injury may have just been a tweak from a recent vasectomy operation and needless to say he was back on in a few points time. If you are in need of a laugh, check out a SFC game as they do indeed have many jokers in the team.

Match 3 - Discheads vs The Formidable Green Machine (Heroes)

Well well well, what can I say... On Saturday night I went home, baked a humble pie, cut a huge slice, and ate it. And to be honest, although it pains me to say it the humble pie was delicious and even better was the fact that Heroes played an amazing game of frisbee. The end result was 11-6 and to their credit Heroes had basically sealed the game by half time.

To begin with their fearless leader Dan "the Man" Strelan took the bull by the horns and put Discheads on Offense. Some sideline commentators were expecting this to result in a long huck by Buzz and a relatively easily converted 1-0 lead to DH but this wasn't to be. With a male starting line of 4, 7 foot tall monsters I can see why Dan wasn't concerned with the long throw. Adam Dowley played the puppy position like an absolute bulldog, not giving away any quarter and Pete Allen chased down everything long. Heroes raced away to a 6 - 0 lead to take the first half. Also interesting to note was that Heroes scored off almost every turn in the first half which made it very difficult for DH to even feel like they were in the game. Their fluid play through our zone was very impressive and they used every player on the team to great effect. The girls also had a stella game. Full credit to Heroes who continue to play their attractive brand of frisbee and are (finally?) seeing the rewards of their efforts.

Match 4 - Discheads vs GMSS (Give me some sugar)

This was our last game for the day and by this stage some of our members were starting to feel tired and a bit sore. Due to GMSS and Heroes having a draw in the game preceeding this one we knew that in order for Heroes to achieve 4th place we needed to score more points against GMSS than against Heroes. GMSS ran away to an early lead and the game was looking rather ominous. However, we were not the only ones tiring and with some renewed effort and the pressure from GMSS dropping a little we clawed our way back into the game. A highlight for me was playing the puppy in the last couple of (very very long) points and forcing one of the turnovers very close to their line. Although we probably didn't convert the turn (ah, missed opportunities) it was still good to put that sort of pressure on their handlers. You may be thinking surely this was not just the work of one man running tirelessly after the disc like a possessed puppy dog and you are correct. The ladies on our team, Vanessa, Chantelle, Jo, Bri(atch), and last but by no means least Sarah, did a fantastic job all day running in the fence and also often playing in the midfield on offensive points. Although at times these positions may seem to be unrewarding, the pressure of the fence was converted into a number of turnovers and the work in the midfield created space long.

Back to the game wrap-up I believe the end score was 7-5 to GMSS. Well done to them and they secured 5th place.

Conclusion/Credits/Wrap-up (Sometimes titles really aren't all they are cracked up to be)

We finished the tournament in 6th place. Before the tournament Nathan has us seeded in 6th place so I suppose we played right to his expectations. I feel as though we had a pretty good tournament, although we only came away with one win, we challenged teams and almost upset teams that must have been favourites to beat us before the game. Experience is a very valuable thing in frisbee and by playing in tournaments such as these we will undoubtedly improve as a club, a team, and as a group of friends enjoying sports together.

Heroes learn a li'l lovin' from Lovefest 20/10

First of all I must ask that you excuse how crap this post might be because zs I write this I ma ucrrently consuming my 6th beer since our last game, which ended less than 2 hours asgo.

Heroes brought some wicked frisbee right from the get go after the practice tournament last weeekend. First up we played against Griffith and friends, the most spirited team of the tournament. After a hard week of frisbee (Div2 BUML, Div1 BUML, BPL and the first ever Wonder Women game) Heroes were pumped to play some Frisbee, and most importantly to WIN some frisbee.

The first game seemed a little scrappy. Both teams took a while to get in to the game and both teams probably should have capitalised on each others' errors earlier but in the end Heroes managed to take the game something like 9 - 6 or perhaps even closer, I really can't remember that far back now. Griffith were our only opponent who was organised enough to have a spirit "game" during the circle of love and our roses were awarded to Robyn, Adam and everyone's favourite captain, Dan.

Next up saw Heroes playing the number 2 seeded squad (who ended up taking the tournament) The Mexican. I think the most disappointing aspect of this match was the lack of moustache, given Al's display at Halibuts. Thankfully, yours truly was able to bring something extraordinary to the table. Props to Arlin though for his disgustingly seedy mo.

In true Heroes style we used the first game to warm up and realise that it was gonna take a little more effort to bring the competition to this game. The Mexican were made up of a combination of Chimichangas, John Doe and probably a few others so most tipsters would have predicted a pansting, a la last week in Mixed Nat's Qualifiers. Instead, Heroes decided to play some fricken awesome ultimate and lost the game 8-7. Heroes had last possession with this score however unfortunately we were unable to bring it back to a draw after a rather even rest of the game.

Next up Heroes had a bye followed by lunch, which was deliciously welcome. The pools were split at this stage and Heroes were placed with Disc Heads and Sugar, who had both won one and lost one.

Post lunch Heroes played Disc Heads and really brought our A game. Our new recruit Pete Allen only played the first half but in that time we were able to get up 6 - 1. I think most of all our attitude coming in to the game is what got as so far ahead with every Hero wanting to beat these chumps after last BUML Div 2 matchup. This game I think was won by our women, Laura Sonter, Mel, Robyn and Steph, who all put in 113%. Final score was approx 11-6 to Heroes.

Far out, blogging under the influence takes forever.

Finally Heroes played Sugar basically for 4th place in the tournament. It was a draw. What more can I say? I expected more from Sugar but the talk (from other teams) on the side line went along the lines of "Heroes are playing really well today" or "I've never seen Heroes play so strong".

After the game there was discussion about how Frisbee wins after a draw. Often teams will say "Frisbee is the real winner" but I think Frisbee would be pretty pissed about this. Anyway, I'm not pissed, I think Heroes were phenomenal today. Come next time and we will be winning against the tournament champions, and pantsing the rest of them.

 Well I don't know if Nat over at UQ has thought about the seedings for this tourney but Id say this is as good as any. Based on these preliminary results here the unofficial seedings are:

Lovefest - Can you feel the LOVE

With Lovefest just around the corner, the incredible HUC has been nagging me constantly about the team(s) that will be sent to battle. Because he doesn’t socialise with any players on our roster, to keep his secret identity, he wants to hear about the teams and players that will be there on the day. The Heroes Ultimate Club are proud to tell the incredible HUC that both the Heroes and Discheads are going to Lovefest, to get their love on.

Discheads
This team has improved so much other the season, esp. from last season. And then if you thought wasn’t enough, they've gone out and found Matt Boevink and Helen Waring to bolster their numbers. Nice pick ups. Others to watch out for is the captain Spaz. This tall player can handle but also watch out for him to go long as well. Across the board they are fairly strong, look for this team to produce upsets. SportsBet.com.au has odds for the discheads to finish 7th. But this blog wouldn’t be surprised to see that turn out lower.

Heroes
The green loving Heroes have announced a strong team to represent the club at Lovefest. One to look to for the big plays would be the irresistible PAllen. This guy is making his long awaited start for the club and will be a great pickup. ChrisB and panties will be very attractive long options and with lovely strong female options present they have a balanced package. With a very strong tournament as far as other teams go, Heroes will once again put up the fight and battle it out to the end. This blog is tipping (with a favourable draw) a top 5 finish.

Both of these teams are short of the max 10 player spots available. So is the Griffith and The Mexican teams.
