Well well well
Discheads played Poachers on Monday night and went down 14-8. Right before the match it appeared that Poachers may be missing a few players but they rallied their troops and entered a full team. Poachers played really strong, hard frisbee early in the game to take a dominant lead of 5-0. Their two new male recruits played exceptionally, taking big grabs and bringing a real intensity to D. Our best phase of the game came right towards the end where we managed to play some zone Defense and score three points in a row. I also happened to be off the field during this time so I suspect this substitution was influential in stringing some points together.
As always Poachers played a very competitive game and were very clinical with the disc. We very much enjoyed the game and it is games like this that draw the best from our players, which drives the development of our team. I expect big things for the coming weeks!

Poll Result
Well I don't know what to make of this result, I guess we'll have to enclose the alcohol with a gift voucher at the 'not so present' Heroes Store.

AO Match Report Round 1
The question on everybodies lips (from AO) tonight was 'Where's Starky?'. And then also for that matter Grant, Karin and Omar, our new recruits (who we haven't been able to contact and so weren't seriously expecting them anyway). And while we're at it 'Where's Bev?' our volunteer superstar pickup. These were the only questions we asked all night though.
3 Girls and 3 Guys provided us with the opportunity/necessity to play Zone defence against the enthusiastic The Ghost Who Walks (who had really great looking shiny new uniforms just btw - and a healthy bench). We would have prefered not to on opening night, especially against a team with quite a few new players, but playing a point of man defence confirmed that they would kill us all night with the extra guy. The Zone obviously worked to our advantage, leaving their offence confused. The score blew out to 16-5 until the 5 min warning when TGWW kicked it up a notch scoring the next 4 in a row. (Final Score 16-9).
Being a player short meant we all had to put in a bit more effort. The team shared the work load really nicely, with several points going through all 6 sets of hands before scoring. Steph had some great grabs (and probably ran so much that she would have been fatigued for Div1). Dave was solid in long D all night winning almost every ariel battle they forced him into. James had a stellar game with the disc. Vanessa and Alana made precision cuts. And I managed a lay out to score (after almost missing it entirely because I looked away when I thought Dave wasn't gonna throw it). Stand out performances from all!
TGWW caught the disc well, ran hard, and didn't give up (resulting in an awesome finish). A few too many wayward throws under pressure was a large part of their downfall. Game experience should see this improve however.
A good start to the season for AO.

High hopes for a new season
It seems like it's been far too long, too long since I've played frisbee, too long since I've posted (have I ever actually posted or just trolled the comments?). Anyway, here's tonights wrap
Div 2
Heroes tonight initiated the season with two great games in both div 1 and div 2 of BUML. First up we faced Mellow Yellow, who were a bit late to turn up and have said good bye (temporarily?) to John and his wife, and have a couple of new recruits, but we knew we would have a tough, fun, well spirited game ahead.
The game started out evenly with a slight advantage to Heroes, Mellow Yellow calling an early time out. We saw some massive plays from our new recruits, Chloe almost getting a Callahan and James getting an impossible layout to catch the disc only centimetres from the ground.
With only 5 minutes to go the game was tied up at 8 points a piece. Both teams anxious to get on with the game, yet thorough with their strategies, saw Heroes take the final two points to take the victory against a not so mellow Yellow.
Final score: Heroes: 10, Mellow Yellow: 8
Div 1
Heroes made their debut in to div 1 combing players from Div 2 Heroes, dyspnoeics and a few other sources, under the name Super Heroes.
Up against Wushi Finger Hold we took out the first point via a hammer from Carl to the endzone. We traded points until it was 4 each until Wushi took a hold of the game and made a break away.
Heroes welcome Ash, Mel, Mansauce, Adam, Adilia and Tatiana (was there anyone else?) to the club who all individually proved themselves valuable to the team. Unfortunately Wushi took the game in the end however we should be proud of our efforts and I think we may have taken the opposition by surprise. We look forward to playing again.
Final score: Super Heroes: 9, MellowYellow Wushi Finger Hold: 16
This Weeks Matches
In Ultimate Frisbee this week we have:
- Agent Orange facing the new team "The Ghost Who Walks"
- Heroes against Mellow Yellow; and
- Discheads against the formidable Poachers.
These games should spark some old rivalries and bring out the best in our teams to start the season in winning fashion. As far as tipping goes, I think that AO should get up against a new team which may be slightly inexperienced but as always, never underestimate the unknown! Heroes will be in for a tough match and I don't know if they will have the resolve to close out the tight game tonight. Poachers have had Discheads the last few times the teams have met but with a new look Dischead lineup I feel that we may have the upper hand this week!
Good luck to all teams. Feel free to bag out or discuss my predictions. Happy Frisbee everyone!

Spirited & Best
What Jangles and JDR were referring to and was missed by Carl is that the Heroes Men won the Spirit award in the BPL. We were awarded a bottle of Schmirnoff Vodka, which Your Humble Narrator proceeded to swig (the vile liquid) in the height of fashion.
Let it be known that I prefer fine whiskeys, such as Laphroaig, Glenmorangie or Talisker. Gavin also concurs.
What I think I'll do is turn the vodka into home made whiskey. Or I could gin it. That might make more sense.
Maybe we could request different liqueurs for all our routine awards. We'll have a massive cocktail party in 5 years time.
It should be noted that what Jangles probably meant was that he won the MVP. He joins TomSteve as the second Hero to win this award :P

The Brewhouse Meeting
After conversation with our BPL supercoach Matt Boevink re: club incorporation, I got thinking about why I play Ultimate and what I want to get out of it, then whether the efforts of incorporation are worth it. So I did some soul searching and some reading (on the office of fair trading website) and called a meeting of Heroes and Discheads captains and vc's (plus a few extras) to get their opinions/thoughts on these same questions. Why do I play Ultimate? What do we want to get out of it? Is incorporation for us? That meeting happened today 20/06/10 at 2.30 at the Brewhouse (ex Clarence Corner Hotel).
The obvious bonus question which needed to be settled first though was that of Discheads involvement/affiliation with the Heroes club. Jo and Sebastian (Discheads captains) along with the Heroes present agreed that these two 'clubs'/teams should come together under one unified banner. This made sense because of the large numbers of Discheads and Heroes being part of the same friendship group/families outside of Ultimate. Plus the combined training sessions had been very successful. Discheads captains will of course still retain full control over their teams roster, and for the short term this 'merger' will not change any other aspects of how these teams are run. And so we officially welcome the Discheads to the club, considering them no longer as estranged second cousins, but rather as sisters and brothers.
Now as far as incorporation goes, very simply it would involve filling out some forms (with a small processing fee), voting people into offices (pres, secretary, tres), and holding an AGM. The rest would be up to us to decide. We could then apply for Government grants and be more professional in approaching potential sponsors if we want to.
With this in mind the rest of the meeting went something like this: (when talking about myself I'll be using third person for this part)
Present: Gavin, Jo, Michael, Bev, Carl, Chris B, Sebastian, Chantelle, Dstrel
-Gavin welcomes everyone, and all enjoy mocking Chris' inappropriate use of the Clem7 tunnel making many late.
-Beers ordered, tone of meeting set.
-Danny gives a history of the club 2007-present
-Carl points out that the seed planting by some Heroes is what led to the origin of the Discheads
-Incorporation discussed.
-Goals discussed (involving 'why do I play Ultimate?,' 'what do we want out of it?' and 'thoughts on incorporation' as well as 'if we became incorporated and gained grants and sponsorship money how would I like to see it spent.'):
Chris- 'I just want to play frisbee!' (exclaimation point added later for effect)
Sebastian- Sustain current teams (3 Div2, 1 Div1 and BPL) and regular training schedule. New discs to new players and/or new discs given to members each year. Uniform subsidies. Field hire (possibly establishing a 'home ground')
Chantelle- There for the social benifits.
Bev- Cones. Portable field tape. Becoming more professional while maintaining our enjoyment. Disc golf. Coaching is important - assisting interested members to do Level 1 coaching through QUDA. Ability to better help new teams coming in, eg. the possible Prince of Persia team Bev will play in. Make it into Firestorm 2011. (added later for effect.)
Jo- Shirts. Discs. Sensibly raised concerns about sustainability of leadership but thought formal leadership will be a benifit/way to move forward. Also possibly filling a 'need' that we could cater to already. Thought it was a worthwhile endeavour though.
Danny- Mentioned that Heroes lose a lot/haven't won many premierships. Our teams to be more successful/competitive. Maintain our good naturedness and spirit. (a defining characteristic). Helping new players learn to play and new teams to set up. Playing in and hosting tournaments. Roadtrips.
Michael- Free/half price first season. Discs. Shirts. Headbands. Other merch. Coaching for Div2.
Carl- Getting Heroes logoed discs ($600 for 50 - cheaper per disc the bigger the order). Looking like professional teams (looking good) - Agent Orange and Discheads getting proper shirts. Updated email lists/good communication. Promote blog which develops club (and even inter-club) community. Helping beginners.
Gavin- Likes playing good Ultimate. Skills dev/training days. Coches/coaching courses for interested members. Likes Ultimate as a sport. Hosting come and try days. Ultimate and Club advertising. Hosting more social events/trophy nights (drinking more beer at the brewhouse). Winning a BPL Premiership. Dominating Div2. Cultivate bonds across teams and also other clubs based around a culture of good spirit employed on and off the field. Starting a Heroes club related comic strip that makes at least a couple people laugh.
So that is basically what we got up to today. Carl had a quote which sums up the sentiment regarding incorporation: 'It's a layout in the right direction.' From here we would like to invite the rest of you Heroes to get involved in the discussion. Do some reading (if you have time) http://www.fairtrading.qld.gov.au/incorporated-associations.htm. Post your thoughts and questions. Why do you play Ultimate? (Don't be afraid to say 'just social' if that's the case - we all love social). There will be an open meeting in a few months time (no date set yet) which will likely be our first AGM - keep an eye/ear out for that.
Next season Div2 was also briefly discussed - with possibilities still being sorted out and to be posted on the blog soon.

If you were lame and didn't come to the totally pumping Heroes party, here's a rundown.
We drew names out of a hat to select sides.
Then we had 2 hours of open trading, where the names were put out on the table and could be moved willy-nilly. At the end of this, a closed trading period involving individual swaps with mutual consent was offered, but not taken up, as people were happy / drunk.
Here's what we came up with.
Agent Orange - Dave, Steph, Grant, Luke (vc), Vanessa, Alana, ChrisB, Gavin (c)
Heroes - Laura S, Laura H, Carl (vc), Meagan, TomSteve, Sean (c), Rick, James, Brad Dull
I'm gonna play for Discheads. Obviously the teams are a little light for numbers. We would like to have smaller squads, but I think we should aim for 10-12. We will probably pick up some new players and maybe some players from div 1, and someone will probably have a friend who wants to play.

Itching for ultimate
Righto currently the new registrations are open for the BUML. We now have three teams Heroes and Agent Orange in div 2 and Heroes in Div 1. Sign up, do it now
Log onto AFDA or find it on our links to look out for .
Not to sure what happened with the Heroes breakup party and the drafts made up in terms of the team/s but I heard it was quite organized, so please someone let us know what happened.
Note: Learn to play nights are happening across Brisbane and we here in the secret heroes lair want you to get out to them. If we want this Agent Orange team to suceed then we need our current players to go out and find some talent. This is everyones responsibility. If we can find our friends and workmates that would be good to play with it would be great! Right now apparently we're stretched across these teams so lets get busy on scouting.
One place to do this would be at (and this is a re-post from the BUML website)

Is this the end of it?
Well with poll finished does the result mean a return of the mr. Agent Orange back into the BUML fold? What will the Incredible Huck have to say about this? Are those alien Discheads going to launch an attack anytime soon and wreck havoc amongst the ranks. Will the decision of the BUML higher authority in relation to the new league arrangements influence what happens? Only time will tell...
How should Heroes re-shuffle to suit our large BUML roster?
Nothing leave it as is 1 (6%)
Bring back Agent Orange (2 div2 teams) 10 (62%)
Introduce Div 1 & 2 teams 4 (25%)
Other (please comment) 1 (6%)

"A Walk In The Park" - with MBB
Tonight we had our final game in our debut season in the BPL. It's been a season of ups, downs and frustrations, but at the end of it I feel as though we can be happy with our endeavours, all things considered.
Seeing George, Myall and Paul off with a win would have been ideal. Buggers scored the first point on O, and we responded, and back and forth and back and forth. They moved the disc too easily at times. Some of our D was great and we looked threatening on O but hesitated a little early on near our end zone. Bevan had a red hot start, getting numerous D's and 3 or 4 points early. It was pretty much a points trade off all match, with one team occasionally breaking the other on D, but break backs occuring. James started playing like a 6'4 person and I burnt it under a number of times, although once turning away as the disc was thrown.. whoops. The lead for Buggers only blew out to 3 points, unfortunately at 12-9. We managed to get the last couple points in a row to pull it back to 14-13, avoiding the time cap for a change (with SlamTown looking on). I'm glad that the score ended close, as this is an accurate reflection of the game and means Stephan can't rubbish us on his blog (or can he?). We didn't really play in patches but played hard all night
Low lights of the season include letting the Lovers steal the game from us first time round, the big loss against Cobras and also Lovers when Jangles was out, and not talking to each other. Also all the tripping on the lines and playing so bad that Matt had to swear at us and that incident leading to Dusty and Chris arguing about the point.
Highlights obviously include the early win against Cobras, the first half against Lovers, all the sweet grabs Myall, Bev and Gav took against unsuspecting opponents, Gavin's 32fun call, all of Mike's praise, beers with JDR and co (actually I felt quite sad that we were at the pub so early), probably tonight's match as a solid performance and other passages of play against Bugs and Passion, namely.
Well I'm stuffed. Goodnight. Big thanks to Matt, again.. not enough words to say how appreciative we are.

OnThePitch - Chasing a Reciever
OnThePitch talks with ChrisB one of the stars of the Heroes this season. In what has been a recent rise to ultimate acknowledgement he has taken the MVP for the club for the season that was. Lets have a look at what he has to say about it.
OTP: So have you mounted your trophy on your desk yet?
Chris: it is sitting on my desk but not mounted yet
OTP: so how do you think you played last night compared to the rest of your season?
Chris: for the first half of the match I was definately playing terribly, couldn't seem to hold onto any catches, most that I would normally have taken easily.
Chris: but by the latter parts I was getting some good run and free space which helped me get back some of the form i was showing in the rest of the season
OTP: so you've become a go to reciever for heroes, are you comfortable with this with your height or do you have handling ambitions?
Chris: I'm loving it to be honest. I feel that with my speed and height I could beat most people on a long throw. Especially now that I'm a designated handler for my UQ league team, the chance to run hard on a Monday is much more valued
OTP: so how would you compare the two leagues? Can you tell me the differences, whats better to play in etc?
Chris: the overall standard of BUML would be slightly higher than UQ league but that doesn't mean that the competition isn't still high in both. UQ league has a lot more newer players mixed in with some very exceptional players however this doesn't detract from the fun because generally the disk is shared round by all teams.
OTP: cool
Chris: UQ league also decided that no one was allowed to play zone until late semester 2 since the majority of players are new to the game which opens up the opportunity for sweet cuts both under and long
OTP: oh really, no zone D thats interesting, fair enough too for in-experienced players i guess
Ok so more about your latest award, who was your MVP for the Heroes this season, if it wasn’t you of course?
Chris: MVP is always a tricky decision in my opinion since it depends on whether you rate the person doing the most glory scores / throws / etc or someone who consistently performs at a high standard. I would probably say either Sean or Dave (who even at 30% effort is leaps and bounds above most)
OTP: haha i cant believe that 30% comment has had such an effect
fair enough answer
so with the browns taking 2/3 awards, what do you say your secret is?
Chris: It must be the German blood in us
OTP: German blood ay? Well now I definitely think no one is going to mess with you now after that. What do you think the missing element is for the Heroes not making the final this season?
Chris: I don't think there was a missing element as such, we just didn't perform well when it was needed. In both finals Heroes started sloppy and had to struggle to get back into the game. Heroes generally finish strongly probably because of the team numbers but we need to switch on from the start and play consistently for the full 60min
OTP: Ok and the last question, what do you think we should do for a break up party?
Chris: beers + cowboy + house + heroes = fun times

Last night saw Heroes take on exQUTisTe for the 3rd place showdown. Unfortunately they did beat us quite easily in the end but we did manage to produce some good plays, in fact scoring the last 3 or so points was good to finish the season with. So quickly getting over that I am pleased to annouce the three winners of the Heroes awards for season 1 2010.
Heroes Spirit Award: Alana Folkes
Heroes Most Improved: Vannessa Brown
Heroes MVP: Chris Brown
