7 November Meeting

As decided at the AGM and previously mentioned here there is going to be a Heroes Club meeting prior to training next Sunday 7 November. It will start at 2.30pm and finish at 3.30pm, at which time training will commence. We will meet in the undercover area at Oakman Park, Toowong. Here is the Agenda:

1- Discuss and vote on the Club Objectives for incorporation application
2- Discuss and vote on Membership details for incorporation application
A) Who can/must become a member?
B) What benefits will members receive?
C) Cost of membership preceded by a cost of running the club report from James
3- Changes to the Club Rules for incorporation application
4- Any other matters relating to incorporation application
5- Brief (subject to time) vision reports from position holders outlining their intentions (eg. goals, ideas, timeframes, assistants, etc.) for the next 12 months
6- Any other matters (subject to time)

Wonder Women v Missfire

Well, I have been a bit slack about writing these summaries sorry.

On Thursday WW took on Missfire. As it is now Saturday, most of the game has been erased from my memory, but I do remember that it was a really fun, competitive game to play!

Sandra Poon and I are very huck happy, and luckily for us, Wonder Women are very good at reading the disc and catching some dodgy floaty throws (well, at least lucky for me, Sandra's hucks are kind of amazing). This lead to several point scoring connections which were awesome to see (and the BPL team spectators seemed to enjoy seeing long plays in women's ultimate too). One of my favourites was seeing Jo free in the endzone, but then for some reason I waited until she was being marked by two players to throw it to her. Jo kept her cool, read the disc perfectly and took it down over the two opposing players!

We also tried two versions of a zone – a 3, 2, 1 zone and a 2, 3, 1 zone. We found that the 2, 3, 1 zone worked better as Missfire were taking full advantage of the gaps in the middle with the 3, 2, 1 zone. You may notice this only adds up to 6. That is correct. We were playing 6 on 6 as Missfire were missing a bit of firepower this week.

Missfire also pulled out a zone on us after that, and for the first point they played it on us we floundered a bit, before sorting ourselves out and working the disc down effectively against it.

Anyway, the final score was, I think, 9-4 our way (although technically we had already won as Missfire had forfeited). With only one week left I am super proud of how much all the WW have improved and how well we are all playing together. There are no weak links on this team.

Oh, and did I mention that this game was a semi-final, meaning we are in the Grand Final next week?

So BPL boys, I wish you luck in your grand final..... oh wait ;)

MVP points:

3 points: Jo for her contested grab in the end zone

2 points: Alana for her contested grab in the end zone.

1 point: Sarah for her continually improving handler skills!

Training

H.U.C Training will be on this Sunday afternoon at Oakman Park, Toowong. Get there at 3:15, a drill or two at 3:30, and a pick-up game from 4-5. I hope the weather is considerate of our frisbee needs.

See you all Sunday!

While we're not playing disc - get your smack out

With the 'rain' about and the lack of Monday and Thursday night league the comments are open to all weather related SMACK talk. Feel free to trash it, get it out of your system or forever hold your precipitation. Some of the SFC boys might like to chime in

Who got you into Ultimate?

With the recent mention of Dan receiving the AFDA recruiter of the year, I had been eagerly awaiting the official nod from the AFDA website before creating this post. But seeing how BPL is cancelled due to rain and I just got off the phone with James 'Panties' VP who confirmed this award (there is even a certificate and everything), I figured that tonight was as good a night as any type it up.

So, as club president I take great honour in congratulating Daniel 'dstrel-ds-d-danny boy-nugget' Strelan in his receival of AFDA recruiter of the year. It is a deserved aknowledgement for his infectious enthusiasm and encouragement towards new people getting involved. The Heroes club owes so much of its current health to Dan. And as a club we are truly greatful for and humbled by his efforts.

On a personal note, I wouldn't take any of this frisbee stuff as seriously as I do now if it weren't for Dan's suggestion of playing at the upper level and recruiting me into the Heroes BPL team. Before then it was purely a social thing for me (and there's nothing wrong with that!) but these past 12 months have been an eye opener to what ultimate can be. I saw the competitive side of the disc, and as a result I'm fitter and stronger than I've ever been. I've enjoyed my captaincy of div2 Agent Orange, and have even completed the level 1 coaching course. I've asked questions about club incorporation and helped facilitate that process to this point, finding myself elected as club president. I have visions and ideas for the future in regards to this little heroes club particularly involving growth and the contagious inclusiveness that ultimate breeds. More than ever, I appreciate the community of players in brisbane that is not dependant on what team you play for or how good you are, and find myself wanting to be involved as much as possible. This is all the result of Dan putting the idea forward of playing more than just 1 hour on a monday night. It wasn't even something that I jumped at right away - he had to put in some decent effort to persuade and encourage me. Obviously however this is something that Dan is good at, as I know that I'm not the only one who has found themselves loving frisbee because of his enthusiasm (natural recruiting ability).

This leads me onto my last point and title of this post. Who got you into ultimate? Was it Dan? Or someone else? Think about how thankful you are that they did/how much you love playing disc. If it's VERY THANKFUL/A LOT for you then why not show your appreciation by shouting them a beer next time you get the chance. (This may result in a very drunk Dan at the next Heroes 5P's beer and burger night!) Now although Dan sparked my 'ultimate awakening' the person responsible for getting me into it in the first place was my older brother Russ who showed me how to play this continuous, minimal rules version of the game that he had learnt from some visiting americans. He now laughs a bit when he sees how much I love playing the real thing, and that it is an actual sport. I let him know what it means to me, and what he means to me. It's important.

Congratulations once again to Dan 'AFDA-recruiter-of-the-year' Strelan, and a personal thank you for watering my seed.

No BPL tonight

For those BPL guys who aren't on the BPL mailing list: Firstly why aren't you? And secondly,

Hi all,

Late word in from Annerley via phone call just now is that they have closed the fields after this afternoon's storm.

The normal procedure is that they'd let us know by 4pm, and then if there was rain after that, Stu would inspect the field and make a decision to not turn the lights on if there was surface water (puddles) on the field.

However, the groundskeeper is at the field now and reports signficant groundwater, and it won't go away before 7.30pm.

If you are able to text or phone your team-mates if you know they aren't likely to be on email, they'll probably appreciate it.

Cheers,

Jason

Previous Precipitation Prevents Planned Pickup

As the title suggests this week the Heroes club would like to present another version of the 5 P's

Previous Precipitation Prevents Planned Pickup

This is because it seems fields are closed again because of the weather. Which, while looking out my bedroom window on a lazy Monday, appears to be a glorious sunny day capable of drying out even the most moist fields. I hope this picture demonstrates my opinion of the decision:

However with most things frisbee related there is of course a silver lining for anyone willing to look hard. What is it today? Well the Heroes Club would like to invite all teams and friends to come along to Archive (100 Boundary St, West End) for drinks and dinner from 7pm. Archive runs a darts competition from 8pm for anyone interested as well.

Hope to see many of you there

Tactics- German Offence

Although there are many blogs out there about Ultimate and how to play it, this post gives a thorough and easy to read outline of the German (or Feld) offence. Enjoy the read!

How to be Bad-Ass in the 80's

With the return of beautiful, sunny weather, the Incredible HUC has taken a holiday this week, and hit the GC. In between Slammin' Waves & Slammin' Babes (embracing Slam Town culture), The HUC went on a massive bender and ended up busting into the archives of the SlamTown Flatball Club. We hope you enjoy what we've found.

This video was obviously on loan from purveyors of 80's culture, the one and only Dojo. Whilst The HUC only had to sleep with someone to gain access to the SFC volt, the mission of entering the inner sanctum of the Dojo Gardens was put on hold, while HUC soberly considers the best method of beating the Kenshi's high security measures.

Training

Dear Heroes,
Chris, Jamie and myself will be away this weekend playing some frisbee in Bathurst. If weather permits I am suggesting/proposing a training, throwing, social game session this Sunday afternoon at Oakman Park, Toowong starting at 3 or 3:30. For Discheads in particular it has been a long time since we have played and we need to dust off the old disc and get back into it!

Dan, Gav, or Bev (or anyone else that is keen to organise a little something something) could you confirm a time? :)

Also, there is pick-up this Monday the 25/10 at Griffith. It would be great to see everyone there!

AGM Report

I know some people have been eagerly awaiting news from the Heroes AGM, and I've been too busy until now to put a report up here. So for those of you who haven't heard through the grapevine here's what went down:

-The meeting started 15 mins late (on time/early running by 'Frisbee Time') after bulk pint and chips orders were placed. Eighteen people were present with healthy representation from all 6 teams.

-Dan gave us the entertaining, based-on-a-true-story mythology of the origins of the Heroes. It was well written and well delivered. Some laughed. Some cried. All raised their glasses.

-Huddy's vision of playing WUCC 2014 was discussed and embraced by those who are keen to go as well as those who aren't. This will be one of many goals the Heroes club will now start to work towards.

-A mission statement was decided on: To play, promote and develop fun, skilled and spirited Ultimate.

-Although we couldn't agree on what a member is and how much it will cost, the vote to incorporate was unanimous. A second meeting to discuss rule changes, objectives, finances and membership was agreed upon for Sunday 7 November. So put it in your diary now if you are interested in this. Time and Venue TBC but it will likely be 1-2 hours before Sunday training and at the same location.

-In order to communicate the rules and objectives of the club to everyone who plays on a Heroes team, as well as to uphold the high level of spirit for which we like to strive, the development of a Spirit Agreement was supported.

-Finally roles were discussed and positions voted in. Congratulations to:

CHAIR: Laura Sonter

PRESIDENT: Gavin Croft

VICE PRESIDENT: James Morrell

TREASURER: Craig Behrendorff

SECRETARY: Meagan Bulley

ELITE LEVEL OFFICER: Daniel Strelan

TRAINING OFFICER: Sebastian Brown

TECHNICAL OFFICER: Sean Mailander

PARTY LIASON OFFICER: Chris Brown

TOURNAMENT LIASON OFFICER: Carl Behrendorff

HEROES TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS: Carl Behrendorff and James Morrell

MEMBERS OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE: Laura Sonter, Gavin Croft, James Morrell, Craig Behrendorff, Meagan Bulley, Daniel Strelan, Sebastian Brown, Sean Mailander, Jo Ashdown and Bevan Rudolph

-Meeting finished at 7.15 (exactly 2 hours after we started). Another dozen or so people showed up for dinner and drinks including Carl who misread the start time for the AGM to be 7. What a goose! For the hours that followed all anyone wanted to talk about was Frisbee. It was a glorious atmosphere of energy and ideas (which I hope people have written down, so as not to be forgotten with the 5th and 6th pints). Being that no-one else prepared a joke but me, I won the Brew HaHa by default and rewarded myself with the 'free' jug. Boy was it delicious!

Super Hero Showdown

I love the super hero theme that this BUML d2 league has, dont you? Well at least a few teams carry the 'superhero' thing, one of those the Ghost who walks
Heroes knew we would be likely to start slow with all the time off lately so we got a great in and away drill going. We did it well and it carried into the game. The purple "kit(ed) walkers" won the toss and chose to receive so we hucked it down there and put a strong manD on. LauraD injected herself straight into the game with the old run just behind tactic to get the sly block in. Unfortunately we took a while and a few possessions to score but we got it. The walkers quickly traded and got on the board with a good outside in forehand from Luke Allen-Ankins to the miss matched height between myself and Sean?(sorry cant remember names).
We traded points in what was turning into a very tight match. The GWW were staying in the game and used their height very effectively. I guess when you've got it, flaunt it right? I lost track at how many flick hucks came from Luke to one of their 7ft receivers. Heroes let them get out to a three point lead through some sloppy play on our behalf and capitalizing play by GWW. The score got to 8-5 the purples way.
Im not sure what happened but then it all clicked.
The green machine decided to play and show the form of previous weeks. LauraS saw chaddy open-ish (lets face it, he's always open even when there’s someone marking him) going long and decided to  honour the long cut. A beautiful disc went up and with the right tilt to favour the receiver, we made the score. LauraS played superbly actually, assisting in about half of our scores I thought. Lastly BradDull has finally learnt how to run and read a disc!!!  I thought he played fantasticly both on D and O and I can see him being quite dangerous in the finals series.
Heroes managed to pull out something like 4 points in a row and got the win out in the end to make it 9-7.
Special peeps out to Bev, Craig, and Seb for helping us out and picking up for us.

AO vs GoGos

Most of the Agents were super keen to play tonight after a month or so off. Some of us however forgot how to show up on time. I lead the charge of this tardiness, arriving 5 mins late because I decided to do one more job instead of knocking off early. With me was pick up Josh (founder of Discheads) keen to test his legs again after months healing from an operation. Starky caught a slow bus. Robyn caught the wrong bus. Luckily/unluckily GoGos seemed less organised than us with AO putting 7 on the line first, 5 mins after start time.

With the game eventually underway, AO looked rusty but relaxed. After a couple points GoGos picked up Nat and Tati and so we had a real game on our hands. The GoGos beginners were looking much better this week compared to last time we played them too, particularly after the super pick ups came on. This encouraged us to lift our game. In true AO style almost all of our turn overs were from rushed hucks, but to our credit quite a few of these stuck. Despite his short throwing game somewhat lacking, Dave's long throwing game was on fire tonight providing my personal highlight of the match when Alana took a score by jumping what seemed like 2 meters in the air. Cola preemptively celebrated his birthday (tomorrow) by giving us numerous faultless long throws too. This long game coupled with countless high flying ariel D's, saw us take the game: final score 14-6. The only dissapointing thing about the GoGos tonight was their inability to convert the last point after Matt Boevink's dying-seconds-of-the-game layout D forced the turnover just before 'last possession' was called putting them on O. They came close but no cigar.

And the Lord said "Let there be sun for three days straight" and there was Frisbee.

What a terrible last month this has been for Frisbee in South East Queensland. Following Queensland's wettest September on record October has continued the trend of raining out events and causing general depression throughout the population.

First we go back to September 21 where Heroes and Discheads were originally meant to have their showdown for second place which started the tradition of beers and burgers at Archive. Then we experienced rain just about every weekend, making it near impossible to get out on the bike or have a throw. Then we have the cancellation of the South Bank to Southport 100km bike ride which was immediately followed by the second cancellation of Heroes vs DiscHeads, which led to the second episode of beers and burgers at Archive. This night even saw the likes of JdR, and he liked it so much he even mentioned Carl on BUB the next day.

This lack of play caused Heroes to have a down right shocker against Slamtown Flatball Club on Thursday night and the slippery weather contributed to a controversial incident involving an SFC player, a Heroes player, a grand stand and a visible shin bone.

And then there was sunshine (and a shit load of wind), and the sunshine persisted. For it is written that tonight is the night that Heroes take the win over Discheads once and for all. Believe it? Or do you have to be there to see it. I know I will be. Get your tips in for an all-time BUML first on the BUB site.

EDIT: Discheads have a bye tonight. Don't I look like a fool?

On a side note Heroes had our first ever AGM on Saturday - I'm sure more details will be released in another blog post.

Don't forget your 5 P's

What's your 5 P's you ask??

Prior Preparation Prevents Poor Performance
Personally I prefer the 6 P's option, but you'll have to ask me that one in person (Please do...)

This is an applicable motto for all things in life, usually tagged onto active activities, such as training, playing sport, studying etc. But THE MOST APPLICABLE is of coarse DRINKING, and where the 6th P comes in very handy, ask me that one later... (plz do).
Also you'll need to get your practice in before the AGM on Saturday night,
So in that vein of thinking, and with the rain pestering us off the Frisbee fields around Brisbane Heroes and friends (ie everyone else) are going to Archive again!!! Meet there at or before 7 for burgers and beers!
Yes the place is not as cheap and nasty as the bowls club, but hey neither are the beers... (and wines if you so prefer)

100 Boundary St, West End (the good pub below Uber)

AGM and BREW HA HA update

Less than a week now until the Heroes AGM! (This coming Saturday - 16th. 5pm-7pm) If the prospect of sitting down with a group of interesting people in a (serious) meeting style format doesn't excite you than nothing will...

Updates for the BREW HA HA will follow the updates for the AGM so if drinking beer and telling jokes is more your thing skip to the end.

AGM
Laura Sonter has nominated to be the CHAIRPERSON (new position) of Heroes meetings effectively freeing up the President/Vice President to be active in the discussion of issues.

Gavin Croft and James Morrell have both nominated for the positions of PRESIDENT and VICE PRESIDENT. In addition a clearer definition of roles has been put forward for these two positions: The President remains the overseer of the club as a whole, especially in interacting with other clubs/teams, providing direction, vision, and ethusiasm to all its members. The Vice President's role is less stratigic but more operational overseeing the inner workings of the club providing support and accountability to the other position holders.

Meagan Bulley has nominated for SECRETARY. She has also apologised for not being able to make the meeting - and at this point we are chasing a volunteer to take minutes for the AGM.

Daniel Strelan has nominated for ELITE LEVEL OFFICER.

Sebastian Brown has nominated (with a slightly twisted arm) for TRAINING OFFICER.

Chris Brown has nominated for PARTY LIASON OFFICER.

Carl Behrendorff has nominated for TOURNAMENT LIASON OFFICER and HEROES TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR.

Nominations are still welcome for all positions, especially TREASURER, BUML LIASION OFFICER, TECHNICAL OFFICER, ORDERING OFFICER, and FUNDRAISING OFFICER.

BREW HA HA

HUC would like to invite every Ultimate player in Brisbane (and surrounds) to celebrate with Heroes members (past, present, and future) on this momentous occasion.

Time: 7pm-late (Saturday 16th)
Location: Brisbane Brewhouse 601 Stanley St, Woolloongabba.

Also be sure to bring along a disc related joke to share starting from 9.30pm. I will reward the best joke with a jug of beer! Here are some examples to get you thinking:

Q: Where's the Frisbee?
A: It's a-ROUND

WHEN A BALL DREAMS, IT DREAMS IT'S A FRISBEE
WHEN A FRISBEE DREAMS, IT DREAMS IT'S AN UNMANNED STEALTH RQ-3 DARKSTAR AIRCRAFT

Moses, Jesus and this other guy were playing disc golf. After 17 holes they were all tied and Moses had the box. As Moses throws the wind kicked up and turned over his disc right into the lake where it sunk. So he walked over parted the lake to get his disc, and tosses it under the basket. Jesus gets up to throw and does the same thing turning his disc and splash into the lake, but his disc floated. So Jesus walked on the water and tossed the disc under the basket. The other guy decides to try and keep it lower seeing how their discs flew into the lake. He releases the disc and *thwack* right into the first tree bouncing right back at him. Suddenly the wind gusted and the disc took off straight up into the air where it hit a bird. After hitting the bird the disc came slaming back down to earth hard and bounce into the basket ACE!!! Moses turns to Jesus and said, Man I hate playing with your dad.

So come have dinner ($10-$18), drink good beers, share a joke, have some laughs, win the free jug, and consequently drink more good beer.

Heroes Training on Heroes Avenue!

One sunny day, a young tradesman was loitering in the Taringa area, with little to do than scoff down cream buns, custard tarts and 1.5L Ice Breaks. While dicking around in the area, Gavin came across some lush parkland (grass, not wood) on one Heroes Avenue. It was destiny.

I had a drive over there just before, and there are at least two parks that we could use.

Today has little in common with that one sunny day. It's been raining for days and the wind is picking up. What better thing to do than stay indoors and watch movies, drink hot-chocolates, etc etc. That's exactly what could be thought during an important game on a Monday or Thursday. So that's why we are heading over to Heroes Av in Taringa (google it) at 3:30pm today (Sunday, ten-ten-ten).

So COME ON! You KNOW tomorrow is likely to be cancelled. Itching? I sure am. Gonna have a scratch at 3:30. Metaphorically. I'm talking about disc. And the desire to play. And the chance to have a throw and lay out a lot.

Hope I'm not the only one.

Dojo gets the Mojo (just not the girls)

Last nights action saw the men in green stand on the line against the tall timber that are the Dojo outfit. Before the game Heroes were stricken with sickness, injury and late arrivals; Mikey did not pass his fitness test and MattB didnt even bother to bring his kit and Gav was tied up at work. The subsequent warm up, our in and away drill lacked luster and there wasnt a vibe about us before taking the line. Maybe due to the sever lack of game time lately...
Both teams put one score on the boards and then Dojo marched a the disc up score, and then broke us to take the score out to 3-1 early. We called a time out and I watched Danny take some meditating deep breaths. After the t/o we came away with the next 3 points including the above mentioned danny completing a great endzone layout to score. 4-3 Heroes. Then I believe Dojo used a t/o and gathered themselves. Again in the same fashion, they came out to take the half 8-4.
The game was played zone D by both teams all night. I felt that our puppy D was better with many turns being created with some dodgy swings etc compared to the Dojo 2-3-2. The heroes handlers seemed to get it through the front markers, but it was our decision making that let us down. Personally I counted at least 4 endzone throw aways made by me, that on another night would have come off, but not last night. MattB will have the stats on that later - not looking forward to reading those.
Dojo kept pressing away and in the end took it over a down trodden heroes team 15-7. As usual we were our own worst enemies on the night but well done to Dojo. One humorous fact we noted whilst on the line closer to the end of the game when matching up defense was the short line that dojo had on with Pallen, Steve and Fatty all off. Only to still have the average height over 6 ft, including dez and coops on their line haha.

Defence Defence Defence

Everyone loves seeing a contested D. Up high, down low, laying out, laying out to D a laying out O player.  It demoralises the opposition and pumps your own team. Everyone loves it.

The very best defence however, tends to go unnoticed.  The best defence, is marking your player so tight, they don't get the disc.  Staying with them short, covering them long, not letting them get to the open side.  If they get a step in front of you, you get it back.  The best defence is taking your player out of the game.

It's easy to poach, it's easy to let up when you're tired.  But if you want to be the best player you can, stick to your player, and shut them down. Whether your teammates notice or not, that is the very best defence there is.

All games moved to Annerley tonight

In case you don't read the Brisbane Ultimate Blog and don't check your email - all games tonight (4 October 2010) are moved to Annerley. See JDR's post for more info.

Wonder Women V Titanium Nachos

With Wonder Women Captain, Robyn, away in Adelaide, Sandra and Suze took the leadership roles in our second match against Titanium Nachos. Titanium Nachos played a hard game throughout, not letting up at all, turned up a few notches from the first time we played them. Facing a stacked team of strong players we were spooked initially with the TN ladies scoring some fast points in the first half, hucking long into the end zone and passing the disc quickly. After some motivating words from Sandra, Alana played hard and smart, went long and took a huck from Sandra decisively in the end zone amidst some tough D. At the end of the first half the score was 1: 8.

We found our footing after half time and stepped up our game. Both teams mixed up the defence between zone and man, with the points getting longer and more turn overs. On O, WW had some good flow with the disc and some hard cuts with good use of space by members of the team. Vanessa, Sarah, Suze and Sandra showed some excellent handling skills. Our strength as a team continues to be in defence, with some tight marking on man, and keeping up the cup in zone. There were some fantastic Ds by Celine (only her 2nd game!) and myself with sound effects (which may have actually been lucky timing, and an expression of pain as it hit my arm full force!) Towards the end WW mixed it up with some organic plays which seemed to work for some, but not all; after switching it back to more set positions we scored our fourth point. Special mention to Carly, our newest player, who showed some excellent positioning in the end zone and assisted with a point score.

Overall it was a good game from both teams, Nachos played a hard game but this meant we stepped up to play against them and learnt from their skilled plays. Final score was somewhere between Wonder Women 4 or 5, Titanium Nachos 14 or 15

Nice work TN, looking forward to playing again

MVP Points:

3 to Alana for excellent take in the end zone to score our first point.

2 to temporary recruit Celene for super cuts and several Ds on the other team

1 to Suze for good movement of the disc at the back
