Bout time for an update

I've been a-thinkin... it's a bloody good thing that we chumped those Cobras back in Round 3. I'm sure this is a widely held view within the BPL community.

But for us, it means that we can go out against any team thinking "we may not be expected to win, but we're gonna have a crack". I'm sure there are a few more victories for us just around the corner.

Tonight's match against the Dojo was a measuring stick to our improvement. They played their same old game, making things look easy, with hammers, long hucks and great arial grabs. I can only recall one unforced error (of the fumble variety). They played their zone all night, which is something we now play well against. The final score was 15-8, but I think we had a solid performance.

Point's were more or less traded until 3-3, when Dojo took a time out. It was obvious that they needed to turn up the intensity, otherwise we'd stay right with them. A combination of errors on our part and being burnt long saw the score balloon out to 7-3, followed by a Heroes time out, Half Time at 8-3 and a Dojo time out at 9-3, due to our defence really tightening up.

Myall was all over the park tonight with his usual massive grabs. He must have scored 5 points, but was also pivotal in moving this disc through the cup. Once that was achieved, we were able to run, with Dojo unconcerned about our long play. The final score was 15-8.

We were solid as a team tonight, and are really cutting down on unforced errors and drops near our end zone. Tom's threw some beautiful hammers that he had been practicing, often to Gav. We are starting to back ourselves, our style of play and ability. In the past few weeks, there has been an exciting passage of the game where Heroes really tightens on D. After this, the points usually flow. When all these things come together...

Rules of a Travel

On Monday night there was a 'travel' call made by the opposition on one of the Heroes players throw which lead to a scoring catch being made. So as you can imagine that was kinda annoying, so here in the Heroes secret hideout we thought we'd check the rules to understand what constitutes a travel. Now the Defensive player (we won't name names, but they are very experienced and we certainly respect them. This is not to contradict their call but more establish what a travel means) ...called a travel because "the thrower dragged his pivot foot when releasing the disc". So what do the rules say?

18.2.6.4. the thrower fails to keep the established pivot until releasing the disc;
18.2.6.5. the thrower fails to maintain contact with the playing field throughout the
throwing motion;

So what happens when the offensive player, in this case the Heroes player, accidentally drags his pivot foot, along the ground, not pulling it off the ground, in the motion of throwing the disc. So I ask is this called correct? It may be, I dont have a problem with it, but the rules only state that their must be contact with the ground at all times. So because the Heroes player DID maintain contact with the playing field throughout the throwing motion is it a travel?

Secondly the wording of the first rule implies that you might be able to include a pivot drag in the act of releasing the disc. If the rule meant you couldn't drag your foot in the act of throwing it would read:
The thrower fails to keep the established pivot until the disc has been released. (ie left the hand)
BUT the word 'releasing' (means still leaving the hand) was used. Because the 'ing' constitutes motion. Motion is therefore throwing. If then in the act of throwing you drag your foot, it is not a travel - right?

Sure you cannot drag your pivot up the field to gain meters but actually if I am interpreting the wording correctly, in the act or releasing the disc, if there is a drag - its ok?

Dyspnoeics 7

Got away with this one

From what the Heroes thought and read about the new Go Go's (plus the inside mole that we planted)  we thought last nights match was going to be a bit of a walk over. We were in actual fact surprised to go down 1-0 immediately with what was probably lazy D but def organized O from the GoGo's. Heroes were a bit slow and playing lazy ultimate (even though we got in early and did some good dump swing score drills).  We clawed through some longer points to bring the score to 3-3. Those points were so scrappy Im not even going to mention them.

Finally some composure on the disc saw the heroes pull out to 5-3 where we traded points once more to take the game to 8-5. Then the most incredibly silly error where Tomsteve decided to drop the pull in the end zone brought about a well organized straight stack which immediately broke the mark to score. 8-6.
Griffith successfully broke their markers and pulled off a nice flow of play, bringing the disc close to their end zone and 8-7.
Time cap was called...
What resulted was a GoGo score in the end zone after a simple drop turn over at the back from Heroes. It was all to easy for the GoGo's to score. Given the fast speed of the equalizing score, and the fact that Griffith are still to post their first win, they decided that they wanted to continuing playing for the game. They showed incredible spirit to allow this to happen, given they could have taken the draw and first points. Heroes took the last point with a huck from Carl to Dave with relative ease to win 9-8.

From the Heroes secret hideout, Griffith GoGo's are definitely a team to keep an eye on. JDR has coached them fairly well and I would say their improvement is very similar to that of our own BUML side when we just started. Heroes could learn a lot from their play and their organized stacks and we had a great time. 3 cheers to the GoGo's and thanks for a top rated match.

One last thing, have the GoGo's officially taken the nicest team in the league spot away from the Heroes???

BPL - A view from beneath

Well the first half of the season is down, and the Heroes have had a taste of each team. As this team is unknown to the BPL community, we see things a little differently. The following rankings are based on our experiences and other reports and results will be considered sparingly.

1. (2) Dojo - The rupturing of our metaphorical hymen was always going to be a messy, unforgettable and potentially traumatic experience. The Dojo were relentless, but had a "business-as-usual" approach. No hype was necessary. They executed their game-plan with indifference. While we will have a truck-load more confidence next time around, this welcome is hard to forget.

2. (5) SFC - Slamtown flattened our balls with a steam-roller. In contrast to the Dojo, they were all hype and high spirits. Their speed and athleticism was most impressive - the whirlwind oftentimes leaving us bewildered. To see them slip down so far on the ladder is surprising. Perhaps it shows that enthusiasm only gets you so far.

3. (6) Lovers - This is where things get ambiguous and confusing. The Lovers had no passion at all in the first half of our match. They had the countenance of a cancer patient begging to be put out of his misery. Out of nowhere, fearless leader Al Don created an ambush, and we were left helpless. They take #3 purely by the potential that was displayed.

4. (3) MBB - In reality, these guys will finish higher than SFC and Lovers. They play predictable, text-book ultimate, and they challenge you to beat them at it. Very patient and machine-like, with the ability to win most contested disc.

5. (1) Passion - This is most controversial. I was absent from our brawl, and it has been reported that Passion started poorly and then switched on the fist of fury to take the victory. This is not how we see it. Heroes claim that they stuck it to Passion before letting them back into the game. It was probably a mixture of both.

6. (4) Cobras - Early in the season, the Cobra's seemed like a group of athletic young men with bad attitudes. Their strats did not come off and they lacked discipline. They licked more than their wounds for over a week after losing to the Smackable Heroes.

7. (7) Heroes - Our performance? We are really pleased with how we are coming together as a team. Predicted as 15-3 easy-beats week in week out, we forced our critics to take us seriously with a win in game 2. We showed the UQ boys that they couldn't adopt their usual attitude toward us if they wanted to win and we fought hard against the Buggers. Low-lights include the SlamTown loss and the loss to Lovers after being up 8-2.

There you have it. Heroes - feel free to make corrections. Others - enjoy, comment, fight!

Bugger of a game

In leu of anyone actually from the Heroes BPL side deciding to comment on the game on thursday, I thought it best to let the lovely readers in on what happened.
As mentioned in a recent comment the side went down 15-9

If you still want more information you can get a strange and un-passionate review from here where Heroes are never mentioned as the team they beat.

Heroes showed good fight to claw the score back from being down 14-4 to 15-9 to end the game.

Discheads uncover the winning formula!

Last nights Discheads played against the formidable Dyspnoeics side and came away from the game victorious. We welcomed back Josh and he was back to top form with silky handling skills and some great defense. The whole team put in a solid effort and were rewarded for their troubles with a 12-7 win.

This victory gives us a point of reference now to continue to improve throughout the rest of the season. Hopefully I'll have more good news to post in the coming weeks!

Its been a while

So after Easter and what's seemed to be ages since we've played a game, last night saw Heroes able to get together to challenge a div 1 side (Mongo). Unfortunately they never received the memo. So having a bye, the Heroes BUML div 2 squad all turned up expecting to play. What we actually got was a really fun game of pick up/training/awesomeness. With the squad (and i say squad considering the 16 people who turned up) forming two teams and fighting out a bit of a grudge.
My highlight was getting a diving block D out on Dave - who is twice my height!
Other movers and shakers have been the new recruit in Grant. Showing great glimpses of offensive aggression and masterful awareness on D to get many interceptions. The game was played in the usual Heroes spirit that we're know for and I would say most people were fairly happy to just get out their and have a run. Score's i don't think were counted but it was definitely even at the end we'll say 8 all.

On that topic there was a bit of discussion on the appropriateness of a div 2 side playing a div 1 side and what that meant for the game. Some of our players expressed concern about having to play "above our weight division'' and were scared of the demoralization that would only incur. Therefore because this was a bye round and BUML is about developing the skills of players in Brisbane; the suggestion of changing the bye-round game to a pick up match, evenly populated by the div 1 and 2 players based on skill and fitness might make for a better format. Therefore as the spirit of the league might suggest, the D1 players could mix with the D2 and foster better Brisbane connections. Thoughts? Issues? Post away...

WE WON.... the afl.

I managed to catch the last quarter of the Lions game on ABC radio (I don't have a functioning TV) after disc tonight - and boy was it exciting!! In true Lions fashion, we were down at three quarter time, kicked a couple beauts, and momentum saw us home. WHAT A GAME! And even though I don't play for or train with the Lions, I still feel like a winner, just for supporting them. It was good to have one win tonight.

In our defeat against Passion however, I still don't feel like a loser as such. It was a tightly contested first half - our intensity and focus were leaps and bounds above the levels seen in the previous week's game against Slamtown. This contributed to a greater self-belief amongst the Heroes, meaning significantly fewer basic errors. James 'Panties' Morrell won my award (given in my head during an illustrious yet lengthy ceremony) for enthusiasm tonight. He was switched on, and very keen to run - snagging himself an outstanding D in the latter stages of the game after initially being beaten by a brilliant cut. Back in the first half though, we saw time and again Myall's speed going long, and his wonderful timing in the air. He took numerous grabs in the end zone over guys seemingly twice his height! Heroes defense was also at its finest, making the experienced Passion team earn their points. And after having the lead on more than one occasion we hit half time down by 2 (8-6), still very much in the game.

The second half saw Heroes defense continuing strong. And although George perfectly executed countless first cuts, the rest of the stack was getting sloppy - cutting out of time and generating picks. This was possibly due to only having one sub this week (with some players being at the aforementioned Lions game), but definitely a call to greater mental and physical stamina for us Heroes. Not being able to finish many points led to Passion showing us the form of a strong BPL team, dominating the second half 7-2, resulting in a final score of 15-8.

Now although it was an easy victory for Passion in the end, I still feel as though we put in a solid effort, and very much held our own (for a while). As of tomorrow, in an attempt to improve my personal game, I will start doing hard sums while cycling long distances. I would encourage all Heroes to do the same.

For now though I suppose all I can do is continue with my celebrations over the Lions win. Here's cheers!

Gavin.
