Growth of the Heroes Club in 2008 - 2010

JdR's got some interesting numbers and graphs over on the Brisbane Ultimate Blog but today we thought it might be nice to crunch some numbers, make some graphs and analyse the infection of the Heroes virus in Brisbane Ultimate.

The mission statement of the Incorporated Heroes Ultimate Club (or iHUC as I will soon regret coming up with) is "To play, promote and develop fun, skilled and spirited Ultimate". Up until 2010 this grass-roots movement has solely been seen in Div 2 BUML. This year, however, has seen the Heroes club field 5 teams in Div 2 BUML (across the 2 seasons), a Div 1 team, a premiership winning WUFL team and a BPL team in each season. On top of this we have entered a team into Halibut, Brisbane Indoor Championships, Mixed Nats Qualifiers and 2 teams in Lovefest. In a couple years we might come back and analyse these other leagues and tournaments but today lets focus on BUML.

SeasonHeroes playersTotal playersPercentage of Heroes players
2008/11312310.57
2008/2151599.43
2008/3121388.70
2009/11210111.88
2009/22310621.70
2010/12712821.09

This first chart above shows the massive growth of Heroes in BUML Div 2 in the past 2 years. Do you think this is a story that may have influenced the growth of Frisbee in Brisbane as seen on JdR's charts?
Our second chart here shows the percentage of Heroes players against the total number of players in Div 2 BUML. So far it has peaked at 21.70%, which means that just over 1 in every 5 players play for a Heroes team.

What will happen if this percentage continues to increase? A higher chance of trophies in the cabinet? A Heroes league? To be honest I don't think it would be healthy for this number to increase much higher. Realistically Heroes are just set to improve and work our way up through the other competitions. With Heroes vs Discheads in the upcoming semi final we are guaranteed to have a team in this season's grand final. If we can secure WUFL and Div 2 BUML perhaps next season we can really focus on making our mark in Div 1 and BPL.

Give us your thoughts, be brutally honest. Or perhaps just give congratulations once more to Dan on his AFDA recruiter of the year award.

EDIT: Here's one more graph, apparently some people are confused comparing Heroes numbers vs the Total numbers, so I've done a pie chart to represent Heroes vs Others

In this second form of graph you add the percentage of Heroes players to the percentage of Other players and you get the total. This is different to the first form of graph, because if you added the two values together you would get significantly more than 100%. If you wanted to, you could subtract the Heroes players from the Total players to give you the Other players. It's apples and oranges really.

PS: What's your favourite type of chart? And your favourite type of pie?

  1. Nice post.

I would like to see more alignment across the various Heroes teams.

Unless you're "in the know", you'd have no idea that Agent Orange, Discheads or Mellow Yellow had anything to do with the Heroes. They don't wear green, and don't have the Heroes name in their name. Compare this to say the UQ Ultimate Club (fairly consistent with the University colours and the Unicorn), or a club in another sport.

Maybe the 2011 order of Heroes strips should go the full Incredible Irish and the club colours be Green/White/Orange and the same logo, with the three BUML teams being Heroes Green, Heroes White and Heroes Orange. Add to that Heroes Open and Heroes Women and you've got something that looks like a club.

I guess if a permanent training venue is ever sorted, then you'll also get some native turf too.

  2. Quote from Ads to his Dyspnoeics team:
"Unfortunately I think that Exquisite and ourselves are the best two teams left in our pool, so its a shame we play them now...but if we win, we have an easier team to beat in the final!"
    Let the trash-talk begin! :D

For the record, my money's on a Dyspnoeic/Dischead Grand Final, Dyspnoeics winning the pre-game trash-talk (how could you go against the likes of Ads and Mansauce?), but the Discheads keeping to their season-long strategy of walking softly and carrying a big stick, and walking away with the HUC's first mixed tournament trophy. :D

Well, equal first, as I'm also tipping an AO sweep of pool B. But there my objectivity may be in question.

P.S. My favourite type of chart is a pie chart. My favourite type of pie is apple pie.
So I love that you can make pie charts on iPads.
P.P.S. @JdR: Mellow Yellow isn't in the HUC. And there are team lists for the others (admittedly not always the most accurate things n the world) on our blog.

  3. I think Josh Weier deserves a huge mention for that spike in 2009 season 2 which is presumably a direct result of the establishment of Discheads.

  4. JDR - new uniforms have already been mocked up. The reasoning behind keeping each team with its own colour is to create a sense of intra club team spirit and establish a strong rivalry which is healthy i think.

But yes our new uniforms will all be branded with the same insignia ie the heroes layout which is on the back of the green strips atm (or similar)
PS love it how you considered Mellow yellow to be heroes haha. PLUS we did it as an infiltration - to fly under the rader and take over before anyone knew about it.

    fav pie - meat

  5. The mention of Mellow Yellow was intentional, to demonstrate that any old bunch of pissheads could be a Heroes team, for all the casual observer knows.

There is hidden smack talk here of course for the game I'll be playing on Monday night.

  6. James - i think Carl played a role in getting the likes of Jo, Brianna, Sarah, Lisa, craig to play. I was gonna get them to play for heroes but since discheads was starting up they went there instead.

  7. BTW - how is it that you lot can riff on my post and still get more comments than the BUB does?

  8. I want to see a second Heroes team in BPL next year.

At least then someone from the Heroes will get a win!

Its a valid strategy - forget about getting up to the imaginary "BPL standard", and just lower it!!

  9. I'm not sure its smack to call a spade a spade. Mellow Yellow are indeed a bunch of old pissheads (except maybe for Anna).

  10. Wow Heroes blog has become the place to smack talk. Love it.

PS JDR didnt we cover this over here:

  11. JDR - you and your motley students are going down hard on Monday (if you dare to show up). We know MattB is in Peru, and the rest are addled with exam cramming.

Field 5B will run with YELLOW!

  12. The field will run with yellow because you'll be pissing yourself. Muhaha.

Although I don't believe that comment to come from a real Dave B, Dave C or Dave M (or Dave Rob for that matter). MY are too mellow for smack.

  13. Carl did you really refer to yourself in the third person up there?

    shame on you.

  14. The keen players will note that i also I broke third person description halfway through to ;-)

  15. I love the comment about Heroes 2 in BPL.

  16. Is there a problem with The Carl?

Yay for Heroes 2. Will the squad be A/B or X/Y?

    ReplyDelete
  17. What about XY/XX? Entering the Women's team to BPL? They could push for yet another trophy before the guys. ;)

  18. Or H/D (heroes/discheads)?

In reference to Carls iHUC comment, I prefer to use Inc HUC Inc (for Incredible HUC Incorporated).

    Peppersteak or steak and chilli.

  19. Love that my email ended up here...although I think our strategy compared to Discheads is 'walk loudly and carry a small stick, and then beat you while you sleep'. Which is probably not as good spirit.....probably.

    Dyspnoiecs FTW

  20. New jerseys? But Discheads just got new jerseys this year and they look very handsome on us.
Although I do like the Irish colours motif. I didn't know the Heroes were mostly Irish, but the O'Fox clan of Belfast would love it.

Fav Chart: maybe this one: http://www.mediatraffic.de/albums.htm

  21. Yeah, I was surprised as well that new jerseys have apparently already been mocked up. I was also surprised that iHUC (I like it, Carl) is apparently helping to organise the QUDA end-of-year bash.

Not that I'm against either of these things (far from it). Just wondering if/when the Heroes brains trust were going to announce the details.

  22. Ok.

    1. Carl, either stay in the 3rd person the entire way or don't start it. You've gotta stay the course buddy.
    2. Starky maybe you should remove yourself from the Dyspnoeics mailing list, lest our highly strategic conversations and tactics get leaked.
    3. I hope Heroes win on Monday night so Dyspnoeics can teach them a lesson on how to win a grand final the following week
    4. I like American Country Music Charts
    5. All pie is good. Right now i feel like a chicken mornay pie.

  23. I like that everyone assumes that Carl wrote this post.

  24. Yea ive been thinking the same thing ahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  25. of course!! it was rick!!

i thought it was carl because it was so bumhl-centric.

i smirked at JdR's inclusion of Mellow Yellow, obviously intentional and very funny.. you're all dim for missing it.

as for Heroes2BPL, grow a brain.
