Counting the history

Just before Halibut, the Incredible HUC and I were thinking... I know right! - I was actually thinking. Wouldn't it be cool to find out how many have gone before us to serve and protect, to fight for justice and the ultimate way. So both myself and the Incredible HUC mossied on further into the secret hideout and tripped over some boxes (its dark in that cave... oH i've said to much).

Here's the list of all the heroes that have been and come before the current players.

Ok so we have 80 92 individual players whom have at least registered on a AFDA nominated heroes team. This is impressive. And this will only grow!
Other random facts:
- First Heroes team established in c2007 and named "Huddys Hereos"
- Danny Strelan and Sean Mailander are the grandfathers of the team having played in every season since the first team was entered as Huddys Heroes.
- Famous names inc: Nathan Litzow (original player - who would have known?), Andrew Goldstiver, Emily Goldstiver, George Silent Salisbury, TomSteve [BPL MVP ;-)] Jangles (adam beu)

(Disclaimer - Ive checked and re-checked that their are no double ups of names but if a mistake is found let us know cause we want to get it right. Also I know some might have been playing for heroes before others but the numbers go by the official registrations as per AFDA, so if you weren't organized enough to sign up to that, that's why you might have a higher Heroes number. Any new players will now be added to the bottom of the list, this goes for players who might come before others and we did not know about them. I don't want to re-assign individual lifetime heroes numbers, purely cause I'm #29 and I can only remember one number.)

  1. I picked up for Heroes one night. haha

Also, if you are 'fighting for justice' and 'serving and protecting' what does that make me and the rest of us?

  2. If you are doing a history, shouldn't you also point out that Heroes was originally known as Huddy's Heroes?

  3. Impressive. The Australian Dingo team is only up the 90s and its been going for 20 years as of 2008, you guys will be past that in 6 months.

I wonder who will be the first Hero to get their number tatooed only to find out there was an order mix up Michael Slater Australian Cricket team style? Jangles?

  4. Jack - you are the ONLY evil we fight. You know the evil agent orange team? Why do you think its orange? we thought, what colour do we make the team? Wait Jack is evil. Jack is a ranger. Lets make it orange...

Yes Wetnose - the first team was named Huddy's Heroes, a nice name if i dont say so myself. But Huddy retracted his first name when he left. He felt as though it would hold the club back... not to sure why but fair call i guess.

Mikey - Yea we pretty much only exist to out do the dingos :P If only we could hold onto some players, then maybe they'd get their numbers tattooed. I wonder who'll take out the magic #100 spot? Possibly when the club becomes incorporated and players fees get subsidized(!?!) we might attract some super stars to the club? Kinda like Robbie Fowler and Townsville

  5. How far back are you going with AO and Discheads teams? Because there are a few names missing from them. Such as Josh Weier, Andrew Beencke, Leila Dimond, Cam West. Not sure how many games they actually played but they all at least registered via AFDA

  6. yeah, where are those names? and my name is registered as Daniel, so why would you write it another way?

and players like Jules Christie never played a game and who is Adam Busby? Are you considering the Lovefest appearance? Leila never played a game either.

Heroes actually made a democratic decision (similar to government in the Australian episode of the Simpsons) to retract Huddy's name from the title when we were having shirts made up (Huddy had not announced his leave). We referred to ourselves as Heroes more often than Huddy's Heroes, so it made sense.

It took captains a long time to catch on, ala the Brisbane Bears in 1997, and Jangles actually had to join the club before he stopped saying "Formerly Huddy's Heroes, now Heroes" in his post-match love proclamations.

As for Nathan, we are all eagerly awaiting the return of the prodigal son.

  7. Firstly yea ok I missed Cam and others. BUT yes i knew Leila didnt play.
Adam Busby is apparently registared in A/O this year. Josh Wier isnt actually registared to the Discheads team, even though he was capt, we'll add him in with Cam. Nor was Nat, but he was already counted in the original team...
Andrew Beencke, dont know this guy, did he play?

Yes Lovefest was counted and so Misa is a Hero, even though she wasnt offically signed up in the BUML league i thought.
Again i stress I can only add these players to the bototm of the list, its too much work and in the sceam of things it dosent matter to much (Not sure how Josh will think of that - sorry Josh)

  8. oh and danny was spelt that way because of a funny little flaw in my method.

Initially I asked Huddy for a list of his first players, rather than getting them from AFDA. So Huddy provided me with a list and spelt Daniels name "Danny" - isnt that funny?

  9. I also remember Gemma Daley (Tomsteve's sister) picking up with us for a game or 2. How tenuous a link are we allowing for membership?

  10. Also, I see Robyn on there, but what about Adam Dowley? He might be new, but given that he's already sacraficed his knee for the Heroes cause, I reckon he belongs on there ;)

  11. Pickups are not permitted. Adam Dowley is Hero #70

  12. I assume I get a say in this - and that is, technically I've never played for heroes... only discheads before they merged with heroes.

  13. Adam Busby was registered for AO, but ended up telling me he couldn't play. I'll take him off the AFDA list now.

  14. I started as a pick up like 3 years ago.

Rocked up to BUML (then YUFL) with a bunch of coloured shirts and I had a green so I went on heroes, gref had a blue so he went on dyspnoics.

I think that was the second season and Huddy's Heroes had already become heroes or maybe it was the season after that. I seem to remember we used to get creamed a lot, especially over the next 18 months when we seemed to lose all our players each season. It would be cool to see how we placed over the past few years.

Other fun facts: - huddy has a unique red heroes t-shirt which took me like 18 months to finally mail to him after I missed him at mixed nats in Brisbane.
    - The heroes logo was drawn by Sam Challis (I think) who doesn't seem to be on the list but I can't remember if he played hereoes, maybe just sunday pickup
    - #6 Jared can make a mad cocktail :P
    - Back in the day some of us used to play disc in the dark with glowsticks at QUT KG and it was probably the most fun ever

  15. I'd put Jangles on the Famous Names Inc list.
BPL MVP, QLD (and Australian?) rep.

  16. Great trivia, TomSteve!

I remember that the Heroes used to go bowling and perhaps Indian Kitchen, but I never went.

Back in the day we had a number of barefoot bandits. I'd like to start a register.

    #5 Daniel Strelan
    #13 Lawrence Muckerman
    #26 Kathleen Watt (?)
    #34 "Silent" George Salisbury
    #34 George Salisbury

  17. I remember running barefoot for most of my first 2 seasons.

  18. #3 Lauren Kunde was rumoured to have magnet / velcro hands. Neither of these things would help in the pursuit of catching plastic, but none-the-less, her overhead grabs were freaky. I remember her taking a grab over her head after she had fallen to the ground. These falls were far too frequent for Lauren, and I suspect it forced her out of the game (dangerous play).

Her hands were so grippy that I remember her throwing the disc 20m backward by accident. But things were simpler back then. Huddy always said she had a killer forehand, but she was shy about it.

#13 Lawrence Muckerman was a vegetarian Canadian medical student.
